Just putting the word out that here at the Red Hook Poultry Association we are going to branch out into raising Broilers. I am curious to see these birds up close. From my research and speaking to some experts at the Poultry Science Department at NC State it should be an interesting adventure. Has anyone raised birds for meat? We will be getting our new layers also but want to explore the realities of meat birds. We also may be expanding beyond our backyard to a vacant lot around the corner and so will be able to have a greater number of birds.
Another interesting piece of trivia I found out recently while visiting NC State's PS Dept. is that the chicken has become one of the main vehicles in the fight against ovarian cancer. Much of the research being done on ovarian cancer is done using chickens and as a result there have been some promising advances that may go a long way to addressing the causes and treatment of Ovarian cancer .
