Teresa was raised in a fundamental Baptist home as the daughter of a pastor. She then followed in her father’s footsteps, serving in ministry for over 20 years. Her questioning began in her early teens but was suppressed for many years. Ultimately, the questions led her to walk away from her faith in 2011.
Teresa recently ‘came out’ as an atheist at the 2012 American Atheists Convention in Washington DC. She has been featured in The Thinking Atheists podcast, the Richard Dawkins website and numerous other free-thought publications. She has been interviewed by NPR, the Huffington Post, USA Today and CNN. Teresa recently spoke at the Northwest Free-thought conference alongside Richard Dawkins of the Richard Dawkins Foundation and Jerry DeWitt, fellow Clergy Project ‘graduate’ and director of Recovering from Religion. She has the distinction of being the first female ‘graduate’ of the Clergy Project.
Teresa served as a senior pastor in the United Methodist church for the past six years, as an associate pastor for three years and as a worship leader for eight years prior to her term as a pastor. She also taught in a private Christian school in Alabama and Florida for six years.
As a former minister, Teresa brings a broad understanding of the religious lifestyle and its effects on personal wellbeing to the non-theist movement. She’s a dynamic and entertaining public speaker with a heartfelt compassion for those struggling to completely free themselves from their religion. Teresa is available to speak on her own experience letting go of faith, as well as on many other topics of interest to the free thought community.
