WHAT WORKS BEST
WHEN EDUCATING FUTURE EDUCATORS
WHO NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHY INTELLIGENT DESIGN ISN'T SCIENCE?
FRIDAY THE 13TH (Do you dare step out your door?), Perkins, 7:00 p.m.
(Come for extra conversation at 6:45 -- We'll start right at 7:00)
ASTROPHYSICIST BRIAN THOMAS WILL SPEAK ON:
AN EXPERIMENT ON INTELLIGENT DESIGN THINKERS:
WHAT WORKS - - AND WHAT DOESN'T - - TO PREPARE THEM TO TEACH REAL SCIENCE?
Dr. Brian C. Thomas will share from his paper written for The Physics Teacher, "An In-Clas Discussion Activity on the Nature of Science and Intelligent Design," to describe an activity he used several times with elementary education majors, to find out what worked, and what didn't, when trying to help his student understand the science standards in Kansas and the reasons why they should not include Intelligent Design in their science teaching.
Even after explaining the methodology of science, the definition of Intelligent Design, and the Kansas Science Standards, many students still didn't get it. So what activity did he come up with to help them to discover for themselves why Intelligent Design is not science? How were the students thinking about Intelligent Design and science before, and what caused them to start changing their minds?
Plus our own discussion with Dr. Thomas on these issues.
