— AN EXPERIMENT
ON INTELLIGENT DESIGN
MESSAGE FROM DR. THOMAS: "Folks might be interested in reading my paper on this that appeared in "The Physics Teacher" in February 2009. It's nice and short and not nearly as technical as the last one!"
What happened when Dr. Thomas used his classroom of future teachers to run an experiment on their own teachability, specifically to find out what it takes for them to grasp the definition of science, including its methodological limitation to the natural world, along with a definition of Intelligent Design that demands no such limitation?
Dr. Thomas: "Intelligent Design" is a modern form of creationism which takes inspiration from William Paley's 19th century "watch-maker" argument. Proponents argue that life is so complex that a creator is necessary. This movement was most prominent between about 1995 and 2005, but is still quite alive today (as evidenced by the recent film entitled "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed").
A 2005 federal court ruled that attempts to insert ID arguments into a public school curriculum in Dover, Ohio were unconstitutional and that ID does not constitute good science. Since then, the creationist strategy has mostly focused on introducing "critiques" of evolution into curricula.
In 2009 I published a paper in The Physics Teacher journal describing an in-class discussion activity about the nature of science and the status of Intelligent Design as a scientific proposal. In this talk I will discuss the activity and some of the results of using it in a course on physical science for elementary education majors. I'll also make a few comments about a more recent version of the study which includes viewing the NOVA film "Intelligent Design on Trial."

Plus your discussion.
Then the conversation continues at Callahan's or The Green Mill, where we will attempt some more experiments and discoveries.
