Some decent places to start - Hemant always seems fairly well-reasoned to my eyes and ears:

Harris posted a while back about how TSA efforts should focus more on Arab/Persian and Arab/Persian-like people simply because of the high rate of incidence of people who commit terrorist attacks currently that share that appearance. It's not racism in the "black people are genetically inferior" sense, but I can still see it as being similar to a lot of things we would consider racist otherwise ("Hispanics will rob if you get the chance").

I think Harris' argument has been pretty resoundingly defeated both by a security expert he hosted on his own site showing how such a strategy is ineffective to the more empathetic arguments of unfairly targeting and isolating normal, everyday people who have the "misfortune" to look similar to perpetrators of terrorist crimes. I don't think Harris, himself, is racist, but the argument he made is racist (I don't know if Harris ever actually retracted the argument) and is a result of him simply being misinformed or misjudging the situation (but perhaps I'm biased toward giving him a little more leeway than, say, Louis Farrakhan).

To the current situation, I love PZ and I enjoy Harris' talks (his books are...ehhhhh), but I think both are contributing to the problem. PZ is ever the firebrand and his tone, I think, escalates the emotions of the situation. Harris, quite honestly, seems a bit whiny when he alludes to some kind of army of blog readers mobilized by PZ. Both, I think, have valid points about the other, but I'm, quite honestly, more inclined to agree with PZ because I do find it difficult to think of a situation where, for example, torture has any significant degree of reliability of good information or how his argument for a TSA focused on Arab and Persian people stands on solid ground.

You're right, Sam Harris is an intellectual superstar in my book.  If anyone subscribes to his mailing list, then you may be aware that there is a controversy going on that I was unaware of until yesterday.  There seems to be some out there, even from our camp, seriously accusing Sam Harris of being racist (perhaps most notably, PZ Myers).  I have read most of sam's books multiple times and watched just about every video of his lectures, many of them multiple times, and have never seen a hint of anything that could be construed as sam being racist.  I need to look more into the specific charges leveled against him, but maybe someone else out there has some insight on the matter?
