While Sierra Club members are out exploring, enjoying, and protecting the outdoors, 9-1-1 medical assistance may not be a timely option. If you are deep in the wilderness or just at work, you may need to respond to a medical emergency, maybe even your own emergency. See below for registration information.
The purpose of this training is “To provide individuals a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services (EMS) response. This includes wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.”
The American Red Cross course ID number [masked] will be taught on two consecutive Saturdays, April 6, 2013, and April 13, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., totaling 16 hours of instruction. The course fee is $110.00 and includes the $16.00 course manual.
Registration is available at www.redcross.org. Alternatively, call 1-800-REDCROSS and gave the call agent the course ID number. The call agent should be able to find the class, register you, and apply the promotional code. While registering, consider purchasing the course manual for pre-class study. Please act quickly to register because we would like to fill this class primarily with Sierra Club members and Sierra Club member friends. We need a minimum of 4 students and class size is limited to 20 students.
All registration and payment will be through the American Red Cross and Red Cross’ cancellation policy will apply. The American National Red Cross is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions to the American National Red Cross are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Training will be conducted using the course manual, instructor lecture, student discussion, and hands-on training exercises. The instructor will provide materials for the class training exercises. The course covers: Check, Call & Care, Abdominal Problems, Injuries & Illnesses, Allergies and Anaphylaxis, Asthma Attacks, Altitude Illnesses, Bone and Joint Injuries, Burns, Chest Injuries, Choking, Head, Neck & Spinal Injuries, Heat-Related Illnesses, Hypothermia, Lightening, Shock and Heart Attack, Submersion (Drowning) Incidents, Wounds and Wound Infection, Cold-Related Emergencies, Confined Spaces, Diabetic Emergency, Emergency & Non-Emergency Victim Moves, Eye, Mouth & Lip Injuries, Poisoning, Seizures, Snow Blindness, Stroke, and Wounds and Wound Infection.
You will receive a certification that is valid for 2 years upon successful completion of the course. There are two course prerequisites that the instructor will verify at the start of the class: * A current Adult CPR/AED certification or the equivalent. * Be at least 14 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course.
The official course manual will be “Wilderness and Remote First Aid.” It includes skill sheets for performing CPR, and responding to both conscious and unconscious choking emergencies. After class it can be used as an emergency reference guide. Included with the course manual is an 8-panel, foldout, First Aid Reference Pocket Guide specifically designed for use in the field. The Pocket Guide is compact and lightweight, fits easily into a pocket of a shirt, cargo pants, or a backpack, and is weather and tear-resistant.
Class starts at 9:00 a.m. but please arrive at least 10 minutes early. Please park behind the building and go to the back door to be buzzed into the building. You’ll want to take notes, so please bring your own pen or pencil, post-it notes, highlighter, notepaper, laptop, etc. The class will take morning, lunch, and afternoon breaks. If you want to bring a lunch, the facility has a small kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave but please clean-up after yourself. There are vending machines available within the facility and various fast-food restaurants nearby within driving distance.
