Backpacking 101 Classes, Join by downloading and mailing registration form

  • Sep 21, 2013 · 9:00 AM

The classes are not full.

If you want to participate:
1) Download full details and registration form
2) Mail completed registration and payment as instructed by Sept 20

For this event, RSVPing on Meetup doesn't matter but if you'd like to anyway, get on the waiting list and I will move you to the yes list when registration and payment are received.

Have you wanted to try backpacking or at least learn more about it?  We’ll cover gear from head to foot and everything in between in 2 5-hour classes and then take a 3-day, 2-night trip where you can apply what you've learned.  Some of the gear is available for loan to Sierra Club members.

Class #1 is Sept 21, Class #2 is Oct 5.  Participation in both ensures a place on the backpacking trip, on Nov 1-3. Cost for the series is $50 per person (students & seniors discounted) and participation is strictly limited to 25 people.

During the sign-in process all participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the Liability Waiver before you choose to participate in an outing, please go to: .

Is there any chance this class will be offered in the spring as well? Also, do you know yet when the backpacking trip will be? Thanks!!

A schedule hasn't been finalized but the first class would typically be in the first half of February and the trip is typically in late March.

thank-you for the information Paul! I've wanted to learn to hike for some time now, but I've just started a new job and don't have the time off of work yet :(. Please keep posting opportunities, eventually I will be able to make it to a class!

Class times are 9:00 am - 2:00pm. The backpack meeting time is typically around 9:00 am on Friday morning. You can download a complete description of dates, times, subjects covered, and the itinerary of the three day weekend backpack trip. The link to this download is embedded in number 1 -the full details and registration form at the top of this page.

what time would the classes be on Oct 5th, and when would the hike start on Nov. 1st?

I could use a good refresher since I've never actually taken a class from someone experienced. I'm especially ready for the trip in Nov. wherever it happens to be.
