Winter Hike on Perry Lake Trail Perry KS

Get your 2014 hiking season jump started with an invigorating winter hike at Perry Lake. The trails at Perry are named clockwise from the Slough Creek Trailhead at the southern end. We will be hiking the Section 2 East Trail but we will actually be hiking west from the Old Military Trailhead. We will meet at the Old Military Hiking Trail Access on the west side of Ferguson Road just south of the bridge over Little Slough Creek.

• Driving map

This section is 3.5 miles long. We will hike out and back on the “Green” section, making this a 7.0 mile hike round trip.

• Trail map

Most of the terrain is mostly up and down of moderate difficulty with nice views of the lake and the occasional eagle sighting. There are a couple of surprising steep ascents and descents that make this hike a little tougher in places so trekking poles might be a good thing to bring.

This hike may be cancelled if trails are impassable due to weather conditions or temperatures are dangerously cold.

Thanks to Tim for organizing this hike ... enjoyed meeting everyone, sharing stories of other adventures, and learning about the Hy-Vee that's practically in my backyard! Thanks to Sue, as well, for baking cookies and providing hot chocolate/tea for all of us at the end.

Great Hike today. Tim thanks so much for hosting, it was greatly appreciated. Great group of people. Trails were snow covered with minimal ice. Sue thanks so much for the hot tea and awesome cookies. John thanks for sharing your poles - loved them. Lunch in Lawrence and a stop at Sunflower Outdoors completed this great day. I will post pics on Monday. Happy Trails to all

We had a great time, and can now say we winter hiked! I think I will come solo next time, but we sure appreciate all the kindness shown to us and the new friendships created!

I'm coming on my first Sierra Club hike. I've received the mailings for years but never made the time. Maybe it's receiving trekking poles for Xmas...
I'd love to carpool from the PV area; I'm happy to drive (Prius-- seats 4)

Renee, I'm happy to pick you up at 7:45. just didn't want to drive out to 123rd for Raj. My cell is[masked]-3130. I'm at 6720 Overhill Rd; what's your address?

I will drive straight to the trail head. I am new to the area and did not realize that my house would be quite far. See you there : )

  • Tim C.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the trail head at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. The forecast looks decent with 32 and partly cloudy in the morning and 42-46 in the afternoon and sunny. No polar vortex subarctic temps. But it'll probably be very muddy.

    • Tim C.

Overnight temps will make it slick, too. Trekking poles and hiking boots with good lugs are the safe way to go.

Anybody driving from Overland Park and wish to carpool? I am driving from Antioch and 123rd.

    January 9, 2014

    • John

There is room in my vehicle for one more and we could meet you somewhere along 435 at either the Metcalf or Quivira exits. We should be coming through there shortly after 7:30. We'll be stopping in Lawrence at the Sunflower Bike shop and for lunch on the way back if that impacts your decision to ride with us.

Hey John. My house is another 5-10 minutes from 435 and metcalf and I would have to arrange for a ride till metcalf and 435. I will drive rather and would carpool with someone going from OP. Thanks though. See you tomorrow : )

John, I would like to join the Lees Summit carpool ... Melissa, what do you think about coming into Lees Summit?

    January 8, 2014

    • Melissa R.

I'm meeting Sue at Cabela's to join me. LS is kind of out of the way (15 minutes one way for me). For now, I'll just plan on my original plan. Feel free to ride with John. It probably makes better sense.

      January 8, 2014

    • John

Linder, you're welcome to join us. We're meeting at the HyVee at 291 and 50 hwy at 7:10. I can be reached at[masked] if you run a little late.

Linder and Melissa. I sure appreciate the carpooling offers. However, I am going to car pool with John who I have hiked with before. He lives in LS also. We are going to stop in Lawrence on the way back at an outdoor store and get some lunch there as well. John said he has room for a couple more in his vehicle if anyone is interested. We will be going 435 to k-10 through Lawrence. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

    January 6, 2014

That sounds great Linder. I am close to Perkins and Home Depot just off of 50 Hwy. Where would you like to meet and what time are you thinking?

Melissa, I would be interested in carpooling as well if you have room for one more. I live in Lee's Summit so I could drive to BS and meet you somewhere over there. I will chip in for gas as well.

Renee--Just got clarification that dogs arent permitted on Sierra Club trips or day hikes unless the outing was originally posted in advance as a dog-friendly outing. Makes sense and I should have thought of that before I responded. Sorry for any confusion.

No big deal! Thanks for the update, Tim.
