Backpacking 101 Classes, Join by downloading and mailing registration form

The classes are not full.

If you want to participate:
1) Download full details and registration form
2) Mail completed registration and payment as instructed by February 27th.

For this event, RSVPing on Meetup doesn't matter but if you'd like to anyway, get on the waiting list and I will move you to the yes list when registration and payment are received.

Have you wanted to try backpacking or at least learn more about it?  We’ll cover gear from head to foot and everything in between in 2 5-hour classes and then take a 3-day, 2-night trip where you can apply what you've learned. We have a comprehensive collection of gear available for loan to Sierra Club members.

Class #1 is March 1, Class #2 is March 15.  Participation in both ensures a place on the backpacking trip, on March 28-30. We are also offering an optional shake down hike on March 22. Cost for the series is $50 per person (students & seniors discounted) and participation is strictly limited to 25 people.

During the sign-in process all participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the Liability Waiver before you choose to participate in an outing, please go to: .

Worth every penny. I highly recommend this class. Tons of useful information via handouts, lecture, and hands on experience from veteran backpackers.

The class room is inside, and we will have this class rain or shine. Hopefully we may have some nicer weather by the second class, but we have set up tents inside when the weather forced us to Stay inside. However , when it comes to backpack trips, weather is rarely a determining factor on canceling a trip. That is because after taking this class we will be prepared for all kinds of weather:0)

Hello just wondering if the weather is bad will the class still go on or will it be postponed?

Hello! Are members required to take this class before they can join other overnight trips? I have previous overnight backpacking experience and training (leave no trace). I would love to potentially join some of the backpacking trips later this spring and summer but will be out of town for this class. Thank you!

Hi Monica, Good question. Thanks for asking. LNT is so important. You don't have to take this course to participate in local backpack trips. Prior backpacking experience is usually required. It is ultimately up to each individual leader to decide if their trip is appropriate and SAFE for you to participate in. This is why all backpack trips require phone communication with the leader to determine your level of experience in order to move from off the wait list and on to the trip roster.

That sounds perfect. Thank you for your quick response!

We typically offer this class series twice a year. Once in the early fall and once in the late winter. If you register and pay for the series, you are able to pick up missed classes at a later date with no additional charges. Participants often have scheduling conflicts which keep them from participating in all, of the scheduled events. if you can't make it to all of the events and classes, you can always pick up the next seasons scheduled class. You simply need to notify the leader of your intentions.
Several decades ago my 70 year old aunt shared with me a philosophy that has permanently changed my life . "Don't put off what you want to do until you retire. The likely-hood of you not being able to enjoy and participate is too great". I have embraced this philosophy for decades. There will always be something going on in our busy lives that will make the timing inappropriate. The only way I have ever made my many and extensive adventures a reality, is by making them a priority.

Thanks for the clarification. I am an accountant for a manufacturing plant, and we have scheduled an inventory for 2/28 (all US plants do this the same day, so it isn't all up to me). I am almost certain I will be in on 3/1 to work on wrapping up. So I will probably have to make-up the first class later.

I'm interested in taking this class, but I'm unable to attend March 15th. Will there be another offering for class 2?

I have the same question on the first class. It looks like I'm going to be working 3/1. :(

I've already done the training. It as a lot of work, but it sure is fun being in the backcountry for days at a time. I will be joining you all on the backpack part of the trip. If you have a canine friend you'll have to leave them at home this trip. You'll have enough to learn and deal with besides keeping track of your canine friend. Maybe next trip. I always like to have canine cousins join with me on these hikes.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
