Women's Beginner Backpacking on the Pigeon Roost Trail

This will be an easy hike on the Pigeon Roost Trail, a scenic 8.5 mile loop on the south shore of Beaver Lake near Rogers, Arkansas (about 4 hours from KC). Some ascents & descents but no scrambling or real ruggedness.

We'll drive down Friday morning and hike in to the backcountry campsites, arriving by late afternoon. On Saturday we'll hike out and camp at Rocky Branch Park, a Corps of Engineers campground on the lake that's a short drive from the trail head. We have two sites reserved which have electricity and access to bathrooms and showers.

On Sunday after packing up, we'll visit Crystal Bridges in Bentonville for some art appreciation and enjoy a few short nature trails before beginning the drive home.

Whether you're new to backpacking or just want an adventure with a leisurely pace, this is a trip for you! This outing is limited to 10 participants.

Outings like this are one way our local Sierra Club group raises money to fund operations. A donation of $5 would be gratefully accepted.

Mapquest is showing 3 1/2 hours from the meeting point to the trail head and I'm thinking we might stop for lunch in Rogers so I'm thinking 1:30?

    • DeniseStrickler

Let me know where you will go to lunch at. I can meet you there. My number is [masked]

My back weighs 27.4 PDAs with 2 liters of water. Is that a lot?

    May 1, 2014

    • Raechel B.

I think that's pretty good. Mine weighs about the same

I have a small emergency and can't make it now. My horse and dog sitter fell and has a broken hip, so I have no one to dog and horse sit :(
I have emailed the first person on the wait list, so hopefully she can still go. Sorry and hate to miss this one. I had been looking forward to it for a long time and hope there will be more like it.
    Have fun!

Bummer! I hope your sitter mends quickly! We will catch you the next time.

Hey everyone, look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Is anyone meeting us at the trailhead or are we all carpooling?

    May 1, 2014

    • DeniseStrickler

I am meeting at the trail head. Hopefully it's way to find. We are meeting around 1:00 or 1:30 ish?

Also I think I've already posted it but my cell number is (913) 219-6941. Please call and let me know if you're running late or won't be able to make it for some reason. Thanks

I bought a filter too. Wanted to learn how to free some

    May 1, 2014

  • Gina

Is there a water source at the first nights camp site or should we plan to pack in all we will need?

    April 30, 2014

    • Renee A.

Yes, we will be near the lake shore the first night. You can pack in some or all of your water... 2-3 liters should be adequate if you don't plan to filter. I'll have my Katadyn filter for anyone who wants to use it.

For the backpacking night, I just wanted to let folks know, that I have a dragonfly stove, I will be bringing. So, if anyone wants to bring food to add boiling water to, etc. I'm happy to share my little stove! (I'm very excited about my new purchase. Tried it out yesterday, to a fabulous flame!)

    April 29, 2014

  • Melissa R.

I have been thinking about Saturday night's meal. If we will be at a campsite, near our vehicles, we could theoretically bring food to store in the cars...like in a cooler or something, right? I'm just thinking maybe we'd like to cook something together for that night? Is anyone up for that? Foil dinners, maybe? Banana boats, or s'mores? I love to do camping food. Is anyone interested?

    April 23, 2014

    • Melissa R.

I was thinking to bring frozen hashbrowns, with some cream soup, to foil up, and put in/near the coals. Typically, we do a hamburger on the bottom, and veggies, plus this, and it's fabulous. But I think a foil packet of hashbrowns would work too. Maybe cheddar cheese soup would be better...hmm I also have pie irons...They make GREAT monkey bread for breakfast...

      April 24, 2014

    • Renee A.

I will bring my camp stove which has a burner and a grill, so if anyone has burgers, hot dogs, etc. we can do those as well.

I just got out if a boot cast 2 weeks ago, so I'm a bit worried but I'm going.

    April 21, 2014

    • Melissa R.

I wouldn't worry. I'll be there. I'm pretty slow! And Gina takes things nice and easy too. She's got a crazy story, but let it be said, she's recovering as well! We can hang together and bring up the rear!

I'm going to start walking a couple a miles a day, with my pack, to get myself in better shape for this! I can't wait! Also hoping for a couple of new pieces of gear, since last month!

    April 21, 2014

    • Melissa R.

Not to worry! I will still be slow! Just hurting less!

      April 21, 2014

    • Melissa L

No worries, this will be a slow paced fairly easy hike. No one will be left behind!

  • DeniseStrickler

Question. Do we need anything for mosquitoes, like a face net??

    April 21, 2014

    • Melissa L

I don't think you need a face net but you definitely want to wear lots of bug spray to keep the ticks away.

      April 21, 2014

  • Deborah

    Carpooling sounds good.

    April 21, 2014

  • Raechel B.

Would anyone be interested in carpooling? I have a smaller car but could probably get three additional ppl plus their gear in my car

    April 20, 2014

    • Gina

      I will carpool with you.

      1 · April 20, 2014

    • Melissa R.

I am happy to carpool too! We had several in my car on the 101 Backpacking trip last month. I'm good with riding or driving.

      April 21, 2014

  • Melissa L

We will rendezvous at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 2 at the commuter lot in Peculiar Missouri,71 Highway and Route J for those wishing to share a ride. Note that carpooling is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for such arrangements and assumes no liability for them. My cell phone number is (913)[masked] if you need to reach me for any reason.

We reserved 2 sites for Saturday night, #33 and #34. The grand total was $72 so hopefully we can divvy that up amongst everyone who will be camping on Saturday night.

We'll hike out from the backcountry site on Saturday and set up camp for whoever plans to stay over - there are also restaurants pretty close by so we could do dinner out if anyone wants. Here's a link to the campground: http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/rocky-branch-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=72289 It's the closest campground to the Pigeon Roost trail head, should be just a short drive from there.

    April 6, 2014

  • Melissa L

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly. We've reserved two sites at the campground for Saturday night. I know some people are interested in carpooling so I'll let you know our meeting place closer to the date.

I am in on the optional camp site for Saturday.

I will camp out Saturday night

  • DeniseStrickler

    The camp site is fine.

  • Melissa R.

    I'm good with alternate plan.

    March 31, 2014

  • Deborah

I'll go for the optional Saturday campsite idea....

    March 31, 2014

  • Melissa L

I just found out that the lake house will not be available on Saturday night so we are planning to camp at the Rocky Branch campground at Beaver Lake. This is optional and not officially part of the outing but I'd appreciate if everyone on the RSVP list could reply and let me know if you plan to car camp on Saturday night. This will help me to know how many campsites to reserve. Thanks.

Thank you. I have backpacked before, but it was so long ago. So I need a tent, basic stuff like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, underwear, my food, my cel phone and a charger, right? Please, let me know if there is anything else I need! My phone number[masked]-6326. I live in Lee's Summit. How do we know if we carpool, or do I take my own car over there? THanks!

    March 16, 2014

    • Gina

Don't think you will need a cell phone charger unless you have a reeeeally long extension cord!

I am 100% new to backpacking, but I think this would be a great way to start. My step-dad has a pack I can borrow. What else do I need to be seriously thinking about?

    1 · March 15, 2014

    • Renee A.

Hi Rachel, a good rule of thumb is "start with whatever comes between you and the ground." Do you have a tent/sleeping bag/sleeping pad? Also, sturdy boots are important...

  • DeniseStrickler

Could you let me know what type of equipment I would need to bring?

    January 17, 2014

    • Renee A.

Hi Denise, we'll get a discussion board going here on the Meetup site where we can share tips and details. Meanwhile REI has a fairly comprehensive list here: http://www.rei.com/le... ...of course not everything is a 'must,' but it can get you thinking about what you have/need to borrow/would like to buy, etc.
