Backpack on the Big Piney Trail in Paddy Creek Wilderness, Roby , MO

  • Mar 21, 2014 · 8:00 AM

Shake off the winter doldrums and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act with a relaxed backpacking trip in the Paddy Creek Wilderness near Roby, MO.

This will be a 3-day trip, beginning on Friday 3/21/14 and ending on Sunday 3/23/14. Starting at the Big Piney Trailhead by the Roby Lake Recreation Area, we will hike the inner loop of the two loops on the Big Piney Trail, covering approximately 10 miles. The first night will be a dry camp on a ridge featuring a beautiful overlook. The second night’s camp will be near a spring and un-named creek. Sunday morning we will hike back to our vehicles at the Big Piney Trailhead.

I came across a nice presentation of the Ten Essentials on the Mountaineers site a while back. Thought I'd share. I inserted a link in the trip description.

Hello All -- We might run into a tick or two at Paddy Creek since the weather is warming up. Take precautions. It will probably not be a problem but it doesn't take much for these hated critters to get moving around.

I've added some information to the description for this trip. Meetup and Google Maps were not playing nice with each other, probably because Meetup requires a street address for the location. Somehow it decided that Paddy Creek Wilderness was in Alton, KS! No worries. I worked around this by ignoring the "Needs a Location" feature and adding a map link and the GPS coordinates. We can discuss the finer details of directions and coordination as we get nearer the trip.

Too bad you can't make the trip! I don't think we've hiked together since we did the Piney Creek to Fairview section of the Ozark Highlands Trail.
