(9/5 Update) Kayak/Canoe Float Trip, Platte River & Missouri River

  • September 6, 2014 · 8:00 AM

**** This is NOT a Sierra Club Thomas Hart Benton Group Local Outing but attendance is open to all interested paddlers.  Wear your Sierra Club t-shirt!  I'd like to get a group photo of all Sierrans on the float. ******

UPDATE:  1 day till we launch!  Registrations are closed.

•  On Sept. 6th we intend to launch by 9:00 a.m. from Schimmel City Access, Farley, MO.  The Platte Landing shuttle bus will leave by or soon after 8:00 a.m.  We are expected at Platte Landing Park between 1:00 & 2:00 p.m.

• Weather & Water.  The weather looks great.  It'll be cool in the morning and then warm up.  Skies will clear into the day and the chance of rain diminishes after 6:00 a.m.  The river levels appear to be dropping back into favorable conditions.

• Assume the float is a "GO" unless Randy White informs otherwise.  If the weather looks questionable, a final decision will be made by 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon considering a combination of wind, rain, potential for lightning, and river water levels.

• Co-organizer Randy White reports there are approx. 70 people registered and availability of shuttle bus seats is quickly becoming limited.

• Leave all of your passengers and gear at Schimmel City before catching the bus at Platte Landing.  Space will be limited on the bus so bring as little as possible with you on the bus shuttle.

• Co-organizer Randy White has max-ed out his River Run boat rentals and his ability to shuttle boats & gear.  If you haven't made shuttle arrangements (with River Run Rentals or the bus option), then you have to handle your own shuttle arrangements.

• Waiver.  All participants are required to fill out a waiver.  Randy White has sent you a waiver by e-mail if you've pre-registered.  If not, expect to sign a waiver in the morning.  Turn in your completed waiver to get a colored launch card. You must show your colored card before launching at Schimmel City!

• The Missouri Dept. of Conservation and Vicki Richmond, Healthy Rivers Partnership, will be escorting the group with powerboats.

• This morning the City of Parkville was out cleaning up the Platte Landing Park and the Missouri Dept. of Conversation will be out today cleaning up Schimmel City Access.

• News media, including t.v. stations, will be at Platte Landing Park to cover our arrival.  If you have a Sierra Club shirt, wear it!  (For Missouri River issues, go to the Sierra Club THB Groups webpage at http://missouri.sierraclub.org/thb/conservation/missouri-river/index.html)

****

In celebration of Platte County Missouri's 175th Anniversary, join a flotilla of canoes/kayaks launching at Schimmel City Access, Farley, MO, to float down the Platte River and then onto the Missouri River.  The float ends at the new Parkville boat ramp and our arrival in Parkville, MO, is timed to meet at the dedication of the historic marker commemorating the Wreck of the Steamboat Arabia.

If you've never floated the Missouri River, this will be the time to do it with fun and experienced paddlers.

Saturday, September 6, 2014, Location: Schimmel City Access in Farley, MO to Parkville, MO, Distance: 15 miles, Departure Time: 8:00 AM, Float Time: 4+ hours Rate: Free to float!  Pre-register at http://kcriverrun.com/sign-up.html.

Hi All: Thanks for coming yesterday! I think everyone had a good fun float and as far as I know, we didn't have any safety issues. Here's a link to the Kansas City Star article on the event. That's Scott & Colin Coryell on the right hand side of the ramp! http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article1757340.html

Hi Scott: send an e-mail to Randy White @ [masked]. He's got the waiver forms. Thanks for the float report.

When will we know if event has been canceled. I kayaked the platte today wow it was moving fast. Missouri looks really high and fast running.

    September 3

    • Bill N

Scott: Where did you go and how long did it take you? Any report on Platte or Missouri River conditions, other than high water and moving faster than usual?

      September 3

    • Scott C.

I put in at Farley and paddled up steam to platte city and back. I goofed around a lot spent about 5 hours out there. I paddle there a lot and current was flowing pretty good. Lots of junk flowing down the river. I live near smithville lake and have got about 2 inches of rain since Saturday.

What are the shuttle arrangements for those that have their own boats?

    September 3

    • Bill N

Hi John: There were three shuttle options but one of those is full (River Run Rental shuttles for a fee) and the second is filling quickly (the 47-passenger shuttle bus from Platte Landing to Schimmel City). The last option is for you handle all of your own shuttle. If you haven't registered with River Run Rental, go to http://kcriverrun.com.... Randy will bring you up to speed and ask which remaining shuttle option (bus or DIY) you intend to use.

Bill - do you have an extra paddle I can use instead of renting one?

    September 1

    • Bill N

Yes, I've got a paddle for you and a life vest, too. You'll be using a kayak paddle but I'll have an extra standard paddle, too. You're covered!

      Thank you very much

Can we purchase Sierra Club t-shirts ahead of time or at the event Sat. Sept. 6th??

    September 1

    • Bill N

Hi John: I think I remember you from the Sierra Club/Friends of the Kaw float. You had the inflatable kayak, right? For shirts: I don't think anyone has them locally so I went through Sierra Club Store. It shipped very quickly and I received a discount with my Sierra Club membership number.

Where will we meet at Parkville English Landing exactly?

    August 31

    • Bill N

Hi Carol: For the bus shuttle and to park our vehicles at the take-out, we're meeting at the boat ramp at Platte Landing Park. Yesterday Randy White sent an update e-mail to everyone that has registered. In that e-mail, Randy gave the following map links: Schimmel City Access. Here is a link to our Launch Site. https://goo.gl/maps/6j...
Here is a link to our Get-Out Site (Platte Landing Park): https://goo.gl/maps/yi....

So bummed! Looks like I will be moving that weekend now. Ya'll have fun!

  • Carol B.

Bill - is there room for a cooler for my water in your canoe? If not now do I bring cold water and keep it cold?

    August 20

    • Bill N

Hi Carol: Yep, plenty of room for your cooler!

      August 20

  • Carol B.

Thanks Bill, I understand there is a seat in your canoe and it is being saved for me. I appreciate it.

    August 18

    • Bill N

Sounds like a plan! Did Randy confirm that with you? Rule 1: Don't leave the boat. Rule 2: Don't drown while out of the boat in the water. Carol, you'll want to go directly to Platte Landing Park, Parkville, MO, to catch the bus. Leave your car there. Since we'll be in the sun all day, be sure to bring some cold water, some sweet & salty snacks, a good wide-brimmed sunhat with drawstring tie, sunscreen, and to wear clothing that is loose and comfortable. Old tennis shoes will work fine. We'll be the ones in the vintage 1972 Wenonah banana yellow canoe (with over 800 miles of Missouri River float trips).

      2 · August 18

    • Carol B.

      Yes. I'll comply with advise.

      August 18

  • Carol B.

Will they provide a life jacket? I've never floated before and have a little fear. Will they also give me some river education on floating?

    August 12

    • Carol B.

Will someone get me if I look like I'm drowning that is my only question! I all most drown once.

      August 13

    • Bill N

LOL! Yes, someone will help you if you're drowning. But we'll get there before you start drowning and ASAP after you've left the boat. Just don't do that, ok?

      August 13

  • Carol B.

    I registered!

Pennie and I will be going from Lawrence.

Anyone want to go camping after the float trip. I'll bring my guitar and marsh mellows! That way if I sound bad you can throw them at me :)

    July 20

  • Bill N

Hey Scott: It should be a good float, hope you can make it.
FYI, NASA called. They got a distress ping from your GPS unit. ;-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
