Backpacking 101 Classes

  • Feb 16, 2013 · 9:00 AM

The classes are not full. If you want to participate:
1) Download full details and registration form.
2) Mail completed registration and payment as instructed by Feb 8.

For this event, RSVPing on Meetup doesn't matter but if you'd like to anyway, get on the waiting list and I will move you to the yes list when registration and payment are received.

Have you wanted to try backpacking or at least learn more about it?  We’ll cover gear from head to foot and everything in between in 2 5-hour classes and then take a 3-day, 2-night trip where you can apply what you've learned.  Some of the gear is available for loan to Sierra Club members.

Class #1 is Feb 16, Class #2 is Mar 2.  Participation in both ensures a place on the backpacking trip (Mar 22-24).  Cost for the series is $50 per person (students & seniors discounted) and participation is strictly limited to 25 people.

During the sign-in process all participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the Liability Waiver before you choose to participate in an outing, please go to: http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms/ .

Paul, you mentioned you'd be sending out an email about the backpacking trip, did I miss the email? [masked]

I'm wondering when this type of class will be offered again? I think this sounds really fun and would love to get signed up before the next one is full. Thanks for updating me.

No I understand how to register...I just can't make the end of march date for the trip...is there a starting number that must be reached to set up another event like this before fall?

We'll have other backpacking trips through the year (though not so much in the summer) and taking the BP 101 classes will make it more likely that the trip leader would let you participate. For example, someone that took the classes last spring but couldn't go on that trip will be on my Irish Wilderness trip in March.

Sarah, We've never done a second session. It takes a lot of work and commitment on our part to put this series together. I'll be out leading National SC trips later in the spring, and I'll be gone for a month, so that leaves me out. The fall dates haven't been discussed yet, but typically they are in late September and early October with a backpack trip in late October or early November. I've been backpacking for decades and leading trips for at least 17 years. During this time I have come to realize that you can never get your work schedule or private schedule to fit the dates for something you would like to do. If you are truly interested and driven to do anything, you move it to the top of your priority list and you make it happen. Life always throws up obstacles, it is up to us to creatively go around those obstacles and continue on our predetermined path. I will shamelessly quote a Nike advertisement that I live by- "Just Do It"!

I'm with Sarah on this one! Sounds like a great class coupled with the trip, or the trip alone. Looks like there are enough people on the waiting list to follow up with a 2nd trip fairly quickly. I'm game!

I think we "Newbees" were focused on the words under the RSVP icon that read "No spots left". But my check is now in the mail and all three backpacking classes and the trip are on my calendar! Thanks.

Well I can not make the first trip backpacking date...is there going to be another one soon?

Yes you can attend the classes without going on the trip. The class size is certainly limited due to backcountry group sizes restrictions and LNT. Also the difficulty in seating, managing and utilizing a hands on approach in a class room setting, makes teaching a larger group not as effective. Our goal is to educate you about safe backcountry travel practices. We don't want to be reading about you as a backcountry fatality.
This is a volunteer position and we try to make this fun for all of us.
Please be sure to fill out and mail in the registration form.
    Looking forward to meeting you.
