Re: Re: [KC-on-Rails] We're merging with the KC Ruby group!

I can see both sides of this. The Ruby group hits on some very interesting topics that I find useful but Kyle's intent is to provide a forum for more direct interaction between members. In a perfect world, Kyle's group would be a subset of the Ruby group and experienced Ruby group members would attend Kyle's meetups with intentions of pairing with novice and intermediate programmers seeking a bit of coaching. I'm interested in both groups and, as an intermediate level programmer, seek pairing opportunities with both novices and experts.

Along these same lines, I have started experimenting with Screenhero for remote pairing and hope to establish some regular pairing sessions with other local Rubyists of various levels of experience. I'll share my observations with the group as I use the service more over the coming days and weeks.

Andy,

You're right... I'm a member of both groups. Wes's is group is over-my-head most of the time, not bad group, I'm just a newbie with several false starts in RoR over couple of years.

Kyle has expressed a great deal of interest in teaching and mentoring people like me and it is really needed in KC RoR community. I just completed Kyle's class at Kauffman Labs and for the first time, things are starting to take off.

So, maybe Kyle's intentions weren't communicated clearly at first, let's work on that, and I'm glad to help in those efforts... but to have the cooperation and resources of both groups together is, I think, really valuable.

You raise any excellent point that must be emphasized... the distinction, goals and audience are (and should be) different. Wes group: Support the local RoR community though events and meetings. Kyle's group: To teach, mentor and grow the local RoR community with coding meetups and events.

I see this as an opportunity to get more seasoned developers working with newcomers, lead and organized by Kyle. Think about it, if Wes came to mentor me and has to explain Git commands for the Nth time, he'll be frustrated with mentoring at leave, and who could blame him. Yet, if Kyle steps in a helps me get to a point where I can work with Wes more efficiently - - I'm all for it.

Cheers,

Bryan K.

If I'm not mistaken, everyone who signed up for this meetup group is already a member of the Ruby meetup.
For that reason, one would assume that those who signed up, did so because they believed there to be value in having another meetup group outside of KC Ruby.
I for one, like the idea of a smaller group, I'd be more inclined to participate in a smaller group and, to me, that makes it valuable.
But, Whatever the reason, here we all are and I can't shake the feeling that, given the circumstances, disbanding this group, simply because there is another group that we were all already aware of. Is quite far from logical. Maybe I've missed something, am I the only one who feels this way?
