A Preparation for Therapy Dog Work class will be starting April 23, 2013, at Virginia's house at 6:30 p.m. In this class, you will learn the exercises necessary for CGC and Therapy Dog evaluations. These exercises include: Sitting politely for petting, walking through a crowd; reactions to distractions; coming when called and more. This is designed to be a fun class and, whether you are only interested in a CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) title or are interested in a rewarding volunteer career; you and your dog will be working on becoming a team, which will last a lifetime. Come join in the fun.
Testing is NOT included in this class. Periodic testing for CGC is done through KCA. Therapy Dog Testing must be done by a certified evaluator. At the end of the class, you will be provided with the necessary information to contact an evaluator.
In order to be tested therapy dogs must be a minimum of one (1) year old at the time of the test. Testing dogs must be healthy and the handler of good character (aren't we all though??). If a handler wants to do therapy dog visits with more than one dog, both dogs must be tested at the same time. Puppies may be tested for CGC but it is recommended that they be retested as an adult as temperment can change.
For this class you will need a plain buckle collar for your dog; a leash (preferably a 6' leash); and, if you have it, a 15' or 20' training line. You can work with slip leashes or harnesses but be aware you cannot use a harness in the CGC test and you cannot use the slip leash in the therapy dog test. The cost for this six week class is $60.00 plus an additional $10 (annual dues to July 1, 2013) if you are not yet a member of KCA. If you are interested, please sign-up on-line as soon as possible.
There will be no class on May 21, 2013, as that is a Club meeting night, which you are welcome to attend.
