Basic Obedience Class #4

Basic Obedience is the foundation for all other dog sports and is offered to dogs 4 months and older.  A dog that works comfortably with his handler is a much easier dog to introduce to Agility, Rally, Flyball, K9 Freestyle, etc.  In addition, a dog that knows what is expected of him/her is a much happier dog in the long run.

In this class you will learn the basic commands....

Heeling on a loose lead

PLUS we will continue into higher commands as the dogs progress.. leave it, recalls, wait, etc.  We also learn several exercises to enhance your dogs focus on you,

IMPORTANT:  All dogs must have all their vaccinations current including Rabies & DHLPP.  Bordatella is also recommended.  Everyone must bring a copy of your dog's records to the first class.  This copy will be filed with your registration form and kept for our insurance requirements.

We will also help prepare your dog for the Canine Good Citizen Certificate which is often your dog's first AKC title.  In addition to the basic commands, your dog also needs to learn to be comfortable around other dogs and different people.  The CGC is also a stepping stone for training your dog to become a Therapy Dog.  As with all our classes, we use the positive training method.

The class is six sessions long and requires a $60.00 donation for KCA members and $80.00 for non-members.  (the other $20 pays for your KCA membership fee until July 1, 2014)

A minimum of 3 dogs required to sign up to hold this class.

You will need to bring the following...

Loose fitting collar
6 ft. leash
Lots of small soft treats
Water for your dog
A copy (for KCA to keep) of your dog's up-to-date shot records

Good job on the sit, stays and the walking behind your dogs. Remember to practice this week. I was happy to see that you kept up your practicing during the 2 week break. See you next Saturday.

Rocky got kennel cough -- either from the Mill Creek day or from Kroll dog park. The vet thinks it is probably from Mill Creek since he started coughing four days after we were there, and there were a lot of shelter dogs around.

Consequently, we will not be able to attend class this week.

Are we taking two weeks off? I see Basic 3 is 9/28 & Basic 4 is 10/19?

    No meetings on 10/5 & 10/12?

I want to do the 1130 A.M. STAR puppy class that starts 10/19 too, and since I live across town, one overlap is fine, but it looks like there will be three overlaps.

Yes. Oct 5 our club is participating in the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Bakersfield. We hope you and Rocky will come out to Mill Creek Park (9am to 3pm) and enjoy this "doggie day". We will set up an agility demo and a Rally demo. Lots of other clubs and organizations will be there to. It is a fun day for the whole family and great socialization for your pup. Then on October 12 and 13, another local dog club is hosting a two day Obedience Trial. If you would like to compete in the Obedience sports in the future, this will give you a chance to see how it is done. Many of our members are competing in the obedience or rally events. I will try to remember to tell the whole group more next Saturday. Thank you for the chance to work with you and handsome Rocky.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
