[part 2] The decision to wait for Jason and Gya to reach Kem Kor before moving down to trail head was made by Abang Nan. He told me that twice and was adamant about standing his ground of not letting the advanced hikers go ahead on last day.

I'm extremely unhappy about some attitude displayed in the comments here which put much blames on the "EXTRA LOAD" and "EGOISTIC HIKERS". This is really uncalled and unprofessional. The 2 am hike was known to almost every hiker on that day along the trail. What makes you think guides don't talk amongst themselves? What makes you all think that the hikers, especially those who camped at Botak, will not talk and the news go around? Who knows what he mention to the forestry officer behind all our backs? It's their words against people who made the decisions. Prem, I know you guys made sure all of you are safe in the 2 am hike. But none of you are give any respect to his imploring you all not to start off at 2 am.

Thanks everyone for making this possible. It was a great hike, great mountain, great moon, great stars, great atmosphere, great guide, great sleeping mate, great challenge. What else could i ask for more? Looking forward for another crazy G7 hike!

Overall, it was a very good hike, enjoyed the night hike to the peak and avoiding the afternoon heat was just great. We kept a close watch and lookout for one another during the night hike, so all went well.

Congrats to all for making it to the peak and safe return. Had fun hiking, chatting, cooking, teasing, discovering new species, so on. Take the positive and learn, lets work for better dynamics and flexibility as we are not new to hiking in such scenarios. The thing to remember is that we do not have 'ample' time when we do have 'ample' time, there is always a need to keep pace to meet reasonable timing at each juncture. We make mistakes like I do always over-packing, getting backpack soaked and so on, we will learn or suffer a few more times.

Thanks to @Prem for being the beacon during the final push to the peak for the slower hikers. Many other hikers will remember it, echoing throughout Tahan, amidst an otherwise silent climb.

A second round to Tahan is most welcome!

    2 · March 28, 2013

    • Munintaran S.

Yes, we will do the second round of Tahan, but only with Elite/Advance Hikers thus we can have fun to the fullest.

[part 3] Did I not follow instructions? I did. To the "T". I was only slow and it has been made into a "crime"? I don't expect anyone to take care of me 100% ... just relying on people's kindness and compassion. Before anyone shoots off their mouth, it might help to ask the guide (I spent quite a bit of time chatting with him) whether I follow the instructions. I reached Kor on the 1st day before 3pm cut-off time (I made sure I checked with Prem) and also to Kubang way before sunsets. I reached the peak before 11 am cut off time. I made my way down in the freaking mist alone to Botak. Nan refused to let me go further alone in the mist ... I nego'ed with him and he said he will go with me to Kor if we reach Kubang before sunset (I reached Kubang before 5:30, Nan insisted I take some rice for energy, packed and went off at 6:30). I texted Charlie to let him know I won't meet the 3pm cut off time at Kubang but his phone batt died earlier.

You ate chili? Thank you for your suggestion, but its not for me to consider. Ask around the table otherwise go for personal dinner.

      March 29, 2013

  • Rachel L.

Thanks, Munin, for organising the trip. Thanks all for everything .. too much to list down. On special note, I would like to thank Gya and Jason for the company and kindness, Charlie for carpooling, food sharing and encouragement (I'm sorry for making you scavenge and begging for dinner on day 2 ... I still feel bad for forgetting to tell you about food in my food bag), N.Subbra and Avinash for carrying the tent and sharing with me, Subra Gunners for going up again to carry my bag and of course, abang Nan for being a good guide. However, there's something that I want to say here which I hope can be taken as suggestions for improvement. For the record, I also spoke to our guide, Abang Nan. He was extremely concerned about safety, risks and also following his instructions. As much as there are comments here "complaining" about the "EXTRA LOAD", he was also extremely unhappy about the team dynamics, specifically following his instructions [part 1].

In addition 6) Mr. Organiser was the one who organised volunteer(s) to rescue the two injured hikers. Yes, after negotiation - Gunners volunteered. 7) In addition, he was also the one who held back everyone from breaking camp to head back to Sg. Relau till the final two arrived. 8) It is very sad, our egos impaired our judgment - as clashes were already present at the start of the hike. Lets take a step back and see also previous experiences...Its always been safe.

The person who is closely related refused and don't care to go in to carry the begs. I would like to record my heartfelt thanks to Subra who was willing to go in again twice.

      March 28, 2013

    • Rachel L.

I'm extremely grateful for Subra going in to help with my bag. He definitely doesn't need to.

      March 29, 2013

Firstly, it was a no-go hike for me until the last two weeks, then I went for acupuncture treatment plus some test hikes to G.Liang and G.Nuang. The idea of hiking with known hikers and friends with good experience hiking in daylight, darkness, small group, big group and variations, gave me the confidence to try it anyways.

Many thanks to all in the group especially Munin, Prem, Avinash, Jaya, Chee Wei and Subra for the extra excitement and drive. Special thanks to Munin for finally getting this planed and excuted for us. Plans change with quorum and willingness especially when options are there for all to choose. It is a normal scenario to hike in the night and as experienced hikers we have done this many times, we were prepared as we should be. Cautions and warnings are effective for throughout the day and night, snake or otherwise, Tahan or elsewhere.

I would like to Thank You to:
    i) To my fellow Elite Tahan Hikers, Prem Kumar Ramadas, N Subbra, Choo Chee Wei, Avinash, JayaKumar and Subbra. WELL-DONE guys. Thank you again for your ability to follow instructions and achieving the success on your own ability and not at others expenses. You guys are simply AWESOME.
ii) The Nature for great weather, view, safety (no injuries, bad experience (nature), snakes, and ghost) and the hospitality of jungle.
iii) To the host- Laili and Habli, for accommodating all special requests, making arrangements based high specifications and requirements and the complimentary stay.
iv) To the guide Ustaz Nan, for giving the green light for many requests of the majority of us to get the ULTIMATE TAHAN VIEW - The TAHAN SUNRISE - it was Awesome and breath taking.
    v) Tahan Range - for providing us the opportunity to experience the Mother Nature at the best. Opportunity to learn character – I only can be better. Opportunity requires.

Hard Facts- an impartial participants view - 1) 100% of the 11 participants summited and completed the journey/expedition safely. Injuries are bound to happen as this was not an easy hike. 2) The "majority" (6+1 of us) were not forced into hiking at 2am. 3) The organiser discussed and informed us of the risk very clearly and allowed us to decide (yes-like adults). 4) We took all possible precautionary steps example to hike gracefully in a group during dark, changed our headlamp batteries to have the brightest beam, wore gloves and brought rain-coat & extra pair of clothes to keep the elements away. 5) During the hike, safety was once again reinforced and in addition a medical doctor with a first aid kit was always present for possible accidents.

    4 · March 28, 2013

    • Munintaran S.

It was indeed was very touching at the place where the body of hiker was air-lifted. NO ONE is superior in jungle. Extreme and Elite hikers knows how to evaluate and assess all possible angles of nature.

      March 28, 2013

  • Munintaran S.

I would like to say Sorry to:
    i) Elite Tahan Hikers – as we could have done it in style - sorry guys, it was indeed my error in the providing the opportunity and a chance to scale Mount Tahan with Extreme Advance hikers. I never extend any special invitation. My bad for allowing average hikers who failed to follow instructions, maintaining the group dynamics have no sense of urgency and selfish to join the Elite.
ii) Our guide Ustaz Nan – I know you were very upset with the “heavy load” which had slow you down that caused your performance and reputation. Doing Tahan in 4 hours – WOW.
iii) Nature – for extra pollution.

    March 28, 2013

  • Gya S.

I am very happy to have summitted Gunung Tahan on this trip with the encouragement, support, assistance and kindness of Rachel, Charlie, Subra Gunners, N Subra, Chee Wei and Jason. Seemed to have left out the organizer/s (who makes the decisions anyway?) Well, in my opinion they are not worth mentioning. Sudden change of itinerary to hike at 2am ( even against the advice of the guide due to safety concerns i.e.; snake zones) instead of the original plan. Isn't safety the number one concern in any hikes??? As such, the group was split and others left behind. Guys, you have a lot to learn from Alex to qualify as an organizer. Long, long way to go. Even as fast as you can hike, you guys still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of leadership and character."RESPECT IS EARNED NOT GIVEN"

In a nutshell, I thoroughly enjoyed the Tahan hiking experience, it was full of "unnecessary drama" from folks I thought were friends who I felt should have voiced out their differences during the discussions. Nevertheless didn't let that impair my interest to a) see the full moon, b) enjoy the few hours of stargazing and capture the breathtaking view of sunrise whilst enjoying a hot cup of tea, soup and bread!!! Thank you for making it happen Mr. Organiser - I know it was not a popular decision but my heartfelt thanks for considering the views of the majority! Don't let the minority impair you from going forward.

New development. The permit has been approved but, due to 13GE, the plan has changed. Now, it will Merapoh Tahan Merapoh from Monday to Wednesday/Thursday (25-27/28 March 2013). Almost all the team members have agreed to the new changes. I also have open up the registration so that more of you could join. Since this a shorter route - means less demanding (34km *2) - means lighter backpack. However, I need to secure the number for the expedition, first pay first in basis.

Mr. Sundram, not sure how many of us know the physical and mental demands of multiple days of continuous trekking and mountain climbing. Suggest arranging a couple of simulation in Jan and or Feb to select in the team. The simulation should ideally give the participants a reality check.
