fyi re: compass: if anyone is looking to buy a compass, make sure and get one with 'adjustable deinclination' otherwise you will be doing a lot of unneeded math. a good one is c. $17-20....when I bought mine I had no idea what to set it at so the guy at MEC did it for me for an Ontario setting.

This looks like a good introductory trip with the group. I'll try to make it out to a couple of meetings beforehand.

    • Adreena

yup. Never done this before. But I am tired of the regular marked routes. This is a challenge!

ok. thanks for the info folks. I am going to make some calls, but I will let you know what I find out. But if ppl are going to start going on crown lands, take the map and compass course at Conestoga College or just come out to one of our meet ups and I will give you a copy of my notes from the course. I was told if you go to a website called www.ibycus or they had listings of crown lands. And yes, once I get more info I will consider a 3-4 day trek. I just want to get out there and use some of these skills. I just don't want to go at it by myself, that's just too dangerous. Consider taking Dave's wilderness first aid course in the spring too!

Are these the parks you're talking about? They didn't open last year. They're all pretty far away for a weekend.

    Caliper Lake (Nestor Falls)

    Greenwater (Cochrane)

    Mississagi (Elliot Lake)

    Obatanga (Wawa/White River)

    Springwater (Midhurst)

    Tidewater (Moosonee)

    The Shoals (Wawa)

If these are the parks in question..... it's a pretty good trek for a weekend - I'd be interested over 3-4 days.

I live by Springwater. Its closed as a PP but it is gated and you can't camp. they have guards who still check the property out. Would the others be the same?

But camping on crown land: I'm interested!!

Here is a link to a news story about the closings:
It seems to mean the parks can't be used. There is nothing to indicate the land will become Crown land.
