Who Are We
We’re a group that has big plans, and looking for fun. No longer will people sit around complaining about nothing to do. The goal is to get out and have fun doing all sorts of things, ranging from leisurely bike rides to strenuous hikes, from events with just a few people to huge crowds.
We're not professional explorers, tour guides or camp counselors. We're just a group of somewhat normal people who like to have FUN!
Hi. My name is Michael. And I’m hoping to find motivated, ACTIVE, dependable, people to step up, list ideas, become hosts, participate in some way, and encourage others to do the same.
Joining Our Group
Joining is easy. I’ve set this as a private group just to add a level of security. But anyone may join. I recommend that you never use your last name on this group or any others. And never tell your children’s name.
Many of the reasons for certain things that we do are because of situations that have happened or from lessons learned from others. We want everyone to feel secure and safe. This isn’t eHarmony.com, or anything like a dating site. Now if you meet your soul mate (or a shagging partner) at a meetup, then so be it. But this is primarily a site to promote outdoor events and fitness. Please do not send suggestive emails to people you’ve never met.
When you join, we ask a few questions. Please fill these out. It’s one way to determine what kind of events we would like to offer. It’s also an indication whether you are a “poser”, or if you may become a member that will participate. We want people that will step up and contribute to the events.
A recent picture of yourself is very helpful when we are looking for you at a meetup. It is also very helpful to use your first name (only), so we can get to know you. A picture of your doggie or favorite mythological nymph doesn't help others get to know you. Let's face it, we are all here to connect to others. And when you recognize someone from the club, especially the host or organizer, please go up and introduce yourself. If you are shy, then send them an email ahead of time.
This group is only possible by the generosity of its members. There are no dues. However, the organizer does incur a cost and spends vast amounts of time and effort to keep this going. If you decide to donate a couple of bucks to help cover expenses, that would be awesome.
The goal of this club is to provide maximum entertainment for the least amount of money. However, there will be times that a fee will need to be collected to pay for entry fees, gas, rentals, etc. We will do our best to have those cost listed up front.
WE WANT VARIETY!!!
We'll add any event to the schedule that interests us, and ANYONE can make a suggestion. If you want to go naked hang-gliding or play chess in a tree house, that's fine. Mention it on the message board and if there's enough interest we'll add it to the calendar. Also, you may list it in the “ideas” section where people can vote on it. I encourage anyone that may be interested to vote and contact the people involved. If you want it posted immediately, then gather all the needed information and offer to host. I'll put it up and help in any way that you ask. But you must ask.
If you remember anything, then remember this. As you can imagine, being a tour guide, or your personal travel agent, isn't going to happen. This site is here for people that want to meet others while also doing outdoor adventurous things. The only way for this club to flourish is for people to be willing to host meetups from time to time. Please contact me with your favorite activities, and an idea of when, and I'll make you a host for that meetup. It's easier than you think. Pick an activity, date, time, and write a brief description, and you are set.
We encourage all levels of fitness to join the group. However, please have a rough idea about your level and if you can complete the event you are considering. We will try to match you up to someone that is also at your level. For the very strong or fast, add weight or resistance that will slow you down a bit. If you are lacking in ability or lack of proper gear, please ask for help. If you know you are slower, then prepare ahead of time so the rest are not waiting on you. Bathroom breaks, phone calls, normally can be timed better.
All events are at your own risk. You make your own decisions and we, (meaning the Club or Host), accept NO responsibility for your actions or judgment.
Participation and Preparation
Before you come out... Check all of your gear. Some events require more than others. Bicycling, for example… check the air in your tires and whether or not it will shift gears. Do so, at least a week in advance so you will have time to get it to the shop. Backpacking requires a lot of gear. And some of it is expensive. The goal is to be self sufficient. However, your organizer will have a complete set. And other members will have extra gear laying around. Speak up if you are in need. You don’t want to hold up the group unnecessarily. Once may be forgiven. However, much more, then you become a nuisance. Be courteous and respectful of the group’s time. Be sure you are ready first or get on the trail a few minutes early if you are slow.
If you don't have the proper gear, making a run to the store the on the way to meet the group probably isn't a good idea. Of course, stopping at Starbucks when your group has been waiting an hour is not cool either.
This section is related to the one above. And it’s a good reminder to be respectful of others (in our group or not) and our environment. Whatever the event, learn a little about it. The library is a good source. Posting your questions on the message board is another great way. With dozens of members, your organizer will be overwhelmed with lots of general emails.
Your organizer has undoubtedly done some, or a lot of, leg work for many other events and the one you are considering. They may not have done it to your standards or something may have been left out. But, THEY put in some time to get it to where it is. And they are willing to share it with YOU. Be appreciative and supportive. If you see something that needs to be addressed, then don’t start an alliance with other members and bitch. Come up with a possible solution and be CONSTRUCTIVE. We want mature adults, not whiny brats.
This group will practice a “leave no trace” model. It will be our goal to leave an area in better shape than we found it. Bringing a grocery bag along and packing out litter, is a great way to clean up the playground for our next outing.
Many of our activities will be new to some people. All have an element of risk. Some events have an element of danger. Rock climbing is apparent. Backpacking, not so much. But people do get lost, or hurt. Listen to the people in your group that have more experience. Take what they have to offer, evaluate it, and be appreciative. Sometimes what they offer is of no use to you. That’s OK. But don’t make the bad relationship with your dad, their problem. We all come out here of our own accord. Your decisions are your responsibility and yours alone. But the the organizers have an inherited obligation to help and feel some responsibility.
If you have a sport or event that you would like to lead, let us know. We’ll make you an “event host,” and let you run with it.
Children and Pets
“Pain in the neck” pets and kids are never invited to our events. It’s not fair to the others. However, some of our events will be designed for families. If you have kids, please suggest a trip for that purpose. So far, our events were a mixture of both. I have kids and would love to do more group things with other families. If you have questions about if kids or pets may be included, email the organizer.
Removal of members
At times, we will go through the membership list and clear out the people that have not been active in months. If that happens to you, don’t be upset. Just rejoin when you can participate.
We will also remove those that are just not desirable. If you are a pain, guilty of hitting on everyone, or soliciting your product or cult religion, that will get you removed.
OK folks... Certain things need to be covered to ensure the safety and promote an environment that encourages a fun time for everyone. That’s it for now. Let’s get outside, have fun, and get some exercise!
