Most notably, I work at Cloudera, a company that helps organizations profit from their data through products, consulting, training, certification, and support for Apache Hadoop and related tools. On a more philosophical level, I observed throughout my career as a software engineer that most of the really exciting projects I've worked on were, at their core, trying to find interesting patterns in the data. The fact that we now have open source tools that can scale with the increasing amounts of data organizations generate means that we don't have to write systems from scratch. This means that the technology is no longer limited to those with extraordinary technical skills or the budget to hire such people, and that's led to some important trends that will continue to shape our society.
I spent most of my career as a software engineer, but also enjoy teaching new skills to others. I joined Cloudera in 2011 and am a Senior Curriculum Developer, mainly writing course material but also periodically teaching our classes.
