We'll be searching for early spring greens in two types of landscape: an old farm, and then a swampy wooded area. I'm not sure what will be up through the ice yet, but hoping for some beautiful greens.
Weather dependent. If it's snowing or below 38, we'll probably postpone. But not to worry, I expect to be doing a lot of foraging and teaching this spring.
Dress for mud. Bring light bags, spoon or or trowel, and a knife is always useful.
We'll be looking for: dandelion, wild garlic, chickweed, and my one of my favorites: garlic mustard. (and it's good to eradicate it as it's an invasive)
If we are lucky one day soon, we'll get mushroom expert (and my neighbor), Hans Johanssen to lead a walk. http://www.mushroomsandmore.net/ and of course we'll be on the lookout for some mushrooms to take back for identification.
If you want to collect some fungi bring some paper lunch bags along. You never know when we'll come across some oyster mushrooms or chicken of the woods in these woods.
Excited yet? If spring comes on as suddenly as some people are saying it may be very soon that we'll start finding ramps (another favorite) and fiddleheads.

I want to remind people to keep checking out the KatonahGreen calendar to keep up with other local green living events. I only send out event postings. Sign up here: http://katonahgreencalendar.blogspot.com/
I'm also going to start sharing some news here on the Meetup calendar to let you know what some other interesting groups in the area are up to. I have heard rumors that Doug DeCandia is starting a beekeeping meetup. Will keep you posted.
