Katsel Buddhist Meditation Tampa Message Board › Wesak Festival next Tuesday at Drikung Dharmatara Ling, Davenport

Next week on Tuesday, full moon, we will celebrate the Wesak festival. At our center, at 7pm. Bring food to share.
The Wesak festival is the most sacred holy day for the Buddhist world. It celebrates the Buddha's birth, His enlightenment, and Paranirvana (death). Different traditions within Buddhism celebrate these dates separately, but most of the time they fall on the same day or week, the full moon is the target. Different traditions have different ceremonies--hanging lanterns, flags, chanting mantras, making offerings and bringing gifts to the temples, are the most common. Bathing the baby Buddha, by puring water over his head to symbolize purification of our defilements, is the second most common ceremony in Asia.
This is a day to keep all the precepts consciously, develop mindfulness and compassion, renew our vows, take refuge, avoid all killing and eating meat. Many, release animals such as fish and birds, and even insects. It is a day of giving to the poor or invalid, honor parents and elderly people. Offer flowers, lite candles and incense. Celebrate with a heart of joy and light. It is a festival of light!!
In this celebration we are joining the Sangha of Masters, Gurus, high initiates, Arahats and all disciples in light meditation. May we all reach enlightenment and reach a peace that surpasses all understanding.
