The Color Run is a 5K run dedicated to helping combat veterans cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The festival atmosphere, extreme colors, vibrant action of the runners and volunteers who squirt colorful clouds of fine powder in the air and at each other is a photo experience like no other.
The event is scheduled to take place near Minute Maid Park with a starting time of 9 am. Go to the website http://thecolorrun.com/houston/ and look at the map. Color points are indicated along the route. Station yourself near one and shoot away! Shots of the participants dressed in white arriving make a great counterpoint to the end of the race where they are caked in color from head to toe. There will be color 'throws' after the race near the finish point.
Slight precautions should be taken to keep the fine powder out of your camera. Put a filter over your lens and cover the camera with an inexpensive 'rain cover' that can be purchased from the Camera Co-op or made from plastic bags and rubber bands. Unless you want to shoot from the center of the action or with a macro lens, you should be safe with just a grocery bag covering your camera and lens. Be aware that you, too could be sprayed with color if you are standing too close or irritate one of the volunteers....
The color blows off for the most part, but bring a towel or trash bags to protect the inside of your car for the drive home just in case. This is a fun, family event, so feel free to bring spouse, kids, the dog and the neighbors. Sign someone up so you can document their run.
