Introduction to Photography Portfolio Review

One of the many things that the Katy Photography Meetup Group hopes to achieve this year is a Photography Portfolio Review. This exercise in shooting and presenting a themed subject for critique is a wonderful opportunity to grow as an artist. We will have several reviewers. The reviewers will come from many different areas of photography, possibly education, gallery owner, professional photographer, etc. The number of reviews you get depends on the number of members participating and the number of reviewers available. Everyone should get at least three 15 minute one-on-one critique sessions. Be prepared to answer questions about your work and to be challenged.

While this event is targeted to the KAA members, any member can participate in the review for $25. There is no cost for KAA members. Reviews at Photofest cost participants hundreds of dollars, we want to provide that opportunity to you.

Join us as photographer, Jim Fife explains how to create and present a portfolio for this year's portfolio challenge.

For an introduction class, this was a good one. I'd like to see a more focused series on specific aspects of preparing a portfolio. I'd definitely be interested spending an hour or two dealing with just printing and/or matting.

I'm feeling conflicted about this and the KAA meeting at Babaloo's...I think I'm going to KAA thing.

    March 17, 2013

    • Debi

I, too, was conflicted, but I scheduled first and will get the information from both Tom and Ana. Tonight's presentation will explain what we hope to do later this year and will be a huge opportunity to further your photography.

    • Eddie A.

What do you suggest I do? I assumed there would be some type of voting at the KAA meeting....do you think we can vote in absentia/later?

Here is a little bit about tonight's speaker Jim Fife

He became interested in photography in the mid-60's. In April of '71, he joined the Houston Photographic Society. This is when he became serious about photographing. In '83, he started Jim Fife Photography, a commercial studio in west Houston. Two years later, a second photography venture, Oak Hill Photographic Workshops was launched, aimed at teaching photography and supplying photographic opportunities.
Jim has been a judge and lecturer for a number of Houston camera clubs, photography organizations, the Gulf States Camera Club Counsel and Exxon’s annual competition. In 2005, he initiated a Portfolio Review program for the NW Houston Photo Club.
Jim has served as an advisory board member for the HCC’s photography dept for 12 years. April of 2001, Jim was vested as the first “Fellow of the Houston Photographic Society,” its highest honor and in January 2008, he was awarded the Society’s “President’s Lifetime Service Award.”

I'm so sorry to have to miss this!

  • Jeffrey O.

I am attending just to watch with no photos. Assuming that is ok Debbie?

    March 16, 2013

    • Debi

Correct! This is not about your photos this time. This is to explain what a portfolio review is and why you would want to participate. Photographer, Jim Fyfe will be explaining the process and we will have our own review in late October or November.

No Frida. You don't bring images to this meetup. This is to explain how the process works.
