Butterfly Center at the HMNS

How would you like to exercise close up/macro shots? The Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science can offer many subjects for this type of photography. There may be a possibility of getting the museum to let a group of photographers into the facility early when the butterflies are "dormant". This will give us the opportunity to take really good close up and macro shots of the butterflies and rain forest flora.

Let me know if you will be interested to do this meet up.

I would like to welcome many of the new participant in the group. I had a lot of fun meeting everybody for this meetup! It was nice to talk to many of you and to help with information or pointing out some of the many of butterflies that were there. Hope to see you all again in another meetup!

A reminder from a friend to keep your gear warm. Otherwise it will fog upon entering the center and you will be out of commission for a while.

Good tip from Pat. She said that you should dress like it's June because they keep it warm for the butterflies. Didn't know that. Looking forward to it and will bring my monopod and try to capture some good pics.

Let's start the year right with a chance to test out our new and old toys! Excellent opportunity to test out the new cameras or lenses and for some of us, to try things we wanted to try but couldn't get to it!

The museum lobby is usually open before 9:00 am for ticket purchase. Like Debi mentioned, it would be better if we purchase our tickets before hand. Here is the link for purchasing the ticket online:
    http://store.hmns.org/DateSelection.aspx?item=7&venue=1

Just select the date and click continue. Follow the instructions on screen to purchase your ticket.

I will be outside the main entrance at 8:30 am (weather permitting). If it is raining or too cold, I will be just inside the entrance. Mono-pods and tripods are welcome inside the museum, just remember to stay on the path inside the butterfly center.

    See you there!

I would love to have this on a day other than Sunday for us church-goers! Will there be another?

    December 25, 2013

Anybody can go to the Cockerell Butterfly Center. If you would like to lead a non-Sunday event, let us know and we'll see if there are any takers.

Ok, to make it official, what day would we prefer, a Sunday or Saturday? I would prefer a Sunday because of less people will be there early in the morning. Please let me know a tentative date so I can announce it.

Well, I have some bad news but we can still make this meetup if we still choose... I contacted the HMNS and talked with the events/marketing representative. They said that they will not open the butterfly exhibit early. They consider what we were planning an event, which would require us (participants) to "rent" the exhibit for a minimum period of time (2 hrs). The amount of money quoted was close to $[masked] so, because of this (I would not want to pay $120.00 per person in the event of only 10 people showing up), the only option we have is to be there by 8:45 am with tickets in hand (purchased ahead of time) so that we can be the first group in at 9:00 am once they open. It usually start to get crowded in the exhibit around 10-10:30 am. So it gives us about an hour to shoot uninterrupted. If we can work with that, then I would like to still establish a meetup for butterfly photo op.
