Calibrating PC monitors & Picture Printing

  • August 1, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Your Place

We are planning on doing this Meetup via a Google Hangout.  If you have not participated in one of these before, please set it up before hand.  The Hangout will permit web cam and desktop presentation sharing which will be particularly useful for the session.

I will be reviewing some of the following topics:

1. Understanding Gamut, HSL and Colorspace

2. Calibration of Devices - Camera, Monitor, Printer, etc.

3. Getting to Accurate Color in your Workflow

4. How to Maximize Color Constraints in your Edits

5. Building the Best Possible Digital Image for Print

A variety of software tools will be used from X-Rite and Adobe (Photoshop and Lightroom) for this session.  Please bring your questions and join me for the lesson.

Here is the URL for this Google Hangout event.

Original Meetup Request:

"I would love/need to learn how to calibrate my PC for correct color. I also would like to hear where people send their pictures for printing. I'm not talking gallery quality printing, just for pictures for my personal use. If they're nice, you'd like them printed well. I've used MPIX and Wolf for printing and they didn't turn out any better than Walgreens. I'm thinking that I may need to calibrate my monitor because the pics look wonderful on the monitor but come out oversaturated when printed."

Color management is a very interesting subject, presented in a structured way. I learned a lot with the session. Good job Vincent, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

Thanks Juan. I appreciate the input. I think the topic, content and questions were really good. The Google Hangout mechanics needs some further work.

Thanks all for those who were able to join the Meetup/Google Hangout tonight. For those who were not, bear with us on the technical difficulties. I'm trying to get through the primary challenge. Google Hangout allows up to 10 active users, but it is also supposed to permit either a live stream or a YouTube recording of the session for those that did not come in the first group. I was hopeful that Google/YouTube was going to do this automatically but apparently it did not. The session however was pretty good except for a couple of audio/cam glitches. We will need to do some more work on getting to work much smoother. I am going to offer to do another session on the topic again for those who could not get into the session.

Thanks for the effort and I'm looking forward to the next session. I was not able to view the class, however, there was about 10 minutes when I viewed you working on the computer and it was also broadcast on YouTube at the same time.

Thanks Sandy. As part of last nights effort, I should be able to work through some issues for the repeat session.

Got tied up and got to site late. It kinda acted like I was in, but couldn't see anything but the cover picture. I then found a list of on the air videos but never saw you. It may have already been over because it was just after 8. Hope we can have this another time.

All...there may be an issue where we cannot have more than 10 in the video call. If you are not able to get in, then we will have to work through this a bit further for the next session. We are looking to figure out how to set up the session as a live stream and later YouTube video.

We will be starting promptly at 7:10pm. If there are technical issues we can reschedule another session for those who could not get in.

Yes, I think you have to sign up like any of the other services if you are going to be a 'main' participant. The hangout will permit one presenter and nine participants who can also do webcams. It should also be able to simulcast broadcast as a YouTube video.

This is the first time the Meetup Group has used a Google Hangout so it might be a little rough the first time, but there is only one way to find out. So while we are learning about Color Management we will also learn about Google Hangout. If all goes well it could greatly improve future sessions.

Vincent, what equipment from Xrite will be covered? I have the Color Munki Display and the Xrite Color Checker Passport. Looking forward to it because I do it but don't fully understand it.

I use the XRite display1 under Windows 8 but any calibration equipment for monitors can be used as we will be covering concept and not specific manufacturers equipment. I will also cover and recommend the Passport as well.

Will I need separate calibration instructions for each of my computers? I have a desktop with Windows XP and a laptop with Windows 7?

Generally speaking the calibration instruction is the same for monitors and printers within a specific operating system 'brand' (Windows/Mac). There is not a lot of change between them. I will be teaching the concepts of calibration, so these concepts will be applicable across different operating systems.

You do not need a webcam to participate. Only if you want others to see you. If you want others to hear you, you will need a microphone. The curriculum will be pre planned so if all you want to do is watch that is fine. There should be a chat window for questions. That I can answer verbally.

    Ed,

This will be the first time the meetup group has used a Google Hangout for a larger group. Previously I've done it for smaller groups of about five or less and it has worked very well. We hope to use it more often since it is more convenient for speakers and participants both. It also permits participation from folks who may not be in Katy and also allows recording of the session to be viewed on YouTube.

You can find more about Google Hangouts here: http://www.google.com/hangouts/

I am going to setup the hangout and communicate an update with the Hangout URL when we get closer to the event.
