Hidalgo Falls Revisited

  • September 20, 2014 · 3:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is in response to these of you who missed the first trip. Check out the Hidalgo Falls photo album under past events to see the awesome shots the group got.

The location is Hidalgo Falls, Brazos River close to Navasota. The land is privately owned and only members of TRPA can enter through a locked gate. We will meet with member David O'Dell who will lead the group and hopefully take us to the water.....Be prepared for a slight (10 ft) grade getting down ( and back up) the hill and then wear shoes that can take a little water. High grass, shallow water, shouldn't be too bad.

Bring water for drinking, and a snack or lunch with you if you think you will need to eat.  Protect camera gear reasonably for shallow water crossing. Flashlights, Bug spray...feel free to chime in with anything you think might be necessary.

We will meet outside the KCAM and leave cars there or over at Katy Hardware parking lot.  We want to leave around 3:15 in order to get out, find the water and get set up for sunset. We will stay after dark and continue soothing long exposures to try for stars if the skies permit.

It is important to know that we will go as a group and we will leave as a group so that the gate is only opened and closed one time. No exceptions. We will leave on time. If you are running late, you can try to catch up, but him you are not at the gate, you will not be allowed in.

Have been trying to upload the photos I took at Hidalgo Falls but for some reason the system is not letting me. Today was try #4. I guess, if anyone would like to see the photos I took they can go to my facebook page & see them there. https://www.facebook.com/diana.crane.001

Hi Diana... not sure what you mean by 'not letting you', but I'm using firefox browser and when I clicked the browse button nothing seemed to happen. What I found was that the browse pop-up box was being hidden (placed behind) by the browser window instead of in front of it. Try to use the browser without it at full screen while uploading to see if this is the case. Hope this helps :)

Very nice place.....if not for the heat exhaustion I experienced, I would have taken a lot of pictures. Many thanks to Aniket for the help he gave me when I was not feeling well & in helping me back, all the way, to the top of the hill. Also thanks to Roy (who also carried my stuff back to the car) & another member of the group whose name I didn't get for helping me up the last part of the hill. I am feeling much better & would like to visit again when it's a little cooler.

As I was saying, I find it difficult to walk long distances and have to rest often. Are there any areas where I could stop and rest at?

    September 19

    • David O.

It is not a long walk 1/4 mile but there is a slightly steep river bank but has a rope railing to hold onto.

      September 19

  • David O.

Looking at the weather it looks like it will be clear tomorrow evening so we should be able to stay and shoot the stars

    September 19

  • David O.

We will go rain or shine. Went to Hidalgo Falls today to check the water level and it was perfect. When I left the house in Katy it was raining hard but at the site no rain, Hopefully Saturday no rain at the site. Plan on getting muddy and wet I was walking in ankle deep water today

A couple of us plan to carpool from Tomball. What time should we be at the gate? What time does the rest of the group anticipating arriving at the gate?

    1 · September 19

    • Scott A

Looks like its about an hour from Tomball, as well as Katy (strangely enough), so we will plan to be at the location around 4pm.

      September 19

  • Ron V.

I've been under the weather for the past week and don't think I'm going to be up to much of anything on Saturday. With many regrets I need to change my RSVP to not going. :( I hope someone else can use my spot.

    September 18

  • Nahchon G.

Wife made plans this weekend and didn't tell me until today. So I will need to cancel my RSVP for this event. If someone who hasn't went want to go please take my spot and enjoy.

    September 16

  • David O.

Recommend to take plenty of water, snacks, bug spray, and hiking shoes/boots. There are places that you will walk through like slimy slick mud, slippery moss, and water so a pair of shoes that have good traction will help. When I go out there I bring a second pair of shoes because I walk through a lot of water that is a few inches deep to get to some nice places to shoot.
    Look forward in seeing everybody

Hidalgo Falls is near the city of Navasota and from Hempstead here are the directions
Take US 290 west to Hempstead, then SH 6 north to Navasota. As you are coming into Navasota take Business 6 into downtown Navasota and turn left (west) on SH 105. Go 3.5 miles west on SH 105. Immediately after you cross the Navasota River, but before you cross the Brazos River, turn right (north) on FM 159 and go 3.2 miles (past the cotton gin on the right). As the road bends to the left you will see a gravel road coming in from the right and crossing the railroad tracks (White Switch Rd.). Turn Right onto the gravel road between the cotton fields go about a 1/2 mile to the tall chain link gated fence that marks the property.

    September 15

  • David O.

Hello everyone this is just a friendly reminder
It is important to know that we will all go as a group and we will leave as a group so that the gate is only opened and closed one time. No exceptions. We will leave Katy on time. If you are running late, you can try to catch up, but you are not at the gate, you will not be allowed in. Ideally it would be good to car pool to can keep the car count down.
The property at Hidalgo Falls is a controlled access site and is not open to the general public. The gate at all time must be locked so we will enter the property at the same time and leave the property at the same time. We will leave the property approximately 9:15pm to allow for night shots as long as it is not to cloudy.

Happy Friday everyone! Can anyone recommend a good quality tripod? I'm thinking of investing in another before our photo trip on the 20th. Also if anyone is interested, there a hummingbird festival tomorrow at Kleb woods. There should be a "cold front" coming in which would be great for hiking conditions. Have a great weekend everyone!

    September 12

    • Diana C.

Had never heard of Kleb Woods before but went looking for it this afternoon. Didn't get the chance to walk some of the trails.....just went as far as the Hummingbirds. They were quite a few & just beautiful. Inquired about the Hummingbird Festival.....they are expecting 500 plus off & on during the day. Think I'll visit again when there's not too many people & a bit cooler.

OK, Folks. This has become a waitlist situation. If your plans change, please change your RSVP so that the people on the waitlist will move up to the "going" list. 3 No Shows for any member will make them ineligible for future limited participation events. Don't be a jerk to your fellow members. Be courteous and change your reply if you can't make it.

If we bring someone does that count towards the limit of the number of people? My husband would also like to go but he is not a photographer...just would like to see it.

      Absolutely bring him along

      1 · September 1

There is no fee and yes you may bring your husband. As far as transportation we will meet at the Art Museum and we will carpool to the site. The people are great and I think you and your husband will really enjoy the event. Look forward in meeting you.
