Hike Kalalau Trail and possibly camping overnight?

  • January 4, 2014 · 8:00 AM

My boyfriend (Adam) and i will be visiting Kauai for the first time in the New Year. It would be wonderful if others were interested in joining us... if you're experienced and have done this hike before, even better! To be honest, i'm a bit nervous about this hike b/c i'm not sure if i'm in the best shape physically and i'm also scared of heights. BUT I've seen pictures of the trail and views from up above the mountains, and it's absolutely breath-taking. So, i'm gonna conquer my fear and just do it :)

I'm hiking in on the 4th as well with two friends. We'll be camping for a few nights though. This will only be my second trip, but you're welcome to join the crew. It is a tricky hike, I definitely recommend getting some hiking poles

The first 2 miles has great views. Keep it simple & enjoy

Two notes: You know you'll need a permit to camp, right? And, winter is rainy season, so be prepared for that. I've never hiked Kalaulau when it's raining but I suspect it will become treacherous in spots.

Yes, we do have a camping permit. We have our camping/hiking gear and are prepared if it rains. Thanks for your comments.

It's not much fun to try and hike in, camp, then hike out the next day. You can do it, but that's a pretty brutal 24 hours.

Im moving to kauai dec 31 and don't think I'll be ready for the trail at that point but it might be fun to hang out sometime! :) a woman I met on couchsurfing.com fell off the cliff 120 feet into the ocean and she was okay! :) we will definitely hike it once we have the gear. Thinking of boating in as an option
