NEW DAY - TUESDAY Bike Ride with Julie!

Waikoa Loop Trail

This is the 5 mile trail that starts out from either the Kauai Mini Golf or Common Ground in Kilauea.  I prefer starting from the Mini Golf, but the stretch from there to the main loop is hilly and challenging.  The main loop is very flat for most of the time, and a bit gravelly, but is good on a bike.  You go through forest and farmland and the treat is the Waikoa Dam Overlook.

Let's meet in the lower parking lot of the Minigolf place.

The Mini-Golf place has bike rentals for $20 (all day) right there (Specialized Expedition Hybrids I think) but if you don't have a bike, it might be cheaper to rent one in Kapaa and transport it up there, if you want to share my bike rack, or stash it in the back of a car or jeep.

NOTE:  MY BIKE RACK HOLDS TRADITIONAL (MEN'S) BIKES - BUT NOT STEP-THROUGH (LADIES) STYLE BIKES.  HOWEVER A STEP THROUGH KIND MIGHT FIT IN THE BACK OF MY CAR.

We should stop in at the Mini Golf place to sign a waiver to use the trail, which is on private property, generously made available by the owner for public use.

If there is any interest in starting at Common Ground instead, we could just drive over after signing the waiver.

Any questions, feel free to phone me, Julie[masked]

Nice moderate activity with interesting views, great company. We got a little muddy and a bit wet during a downpour, but dried out eventually. I'd like to do this once a month or so. Fun!

Julie, I will see you either at the bike place or definietly there at 11:15 to go the trail; thanks.

    • Julie

I'll definitely be there by Coconut Coasters at 11:15 -- but it's looking like I won't be able to get up there at 9am to ride the path with you. It's fun to putter along by yourself, or maybe one of the others will stop by and ride with you. Best for me to stay in and work a little in the morning. See you then!

Welcome Dennis (Hart) thanks for coming all the way from Kekaha for this. Will you be renting a bike at the Mini-golf place? Or in Kapaa and transporting it? Let me know if you need any help with the logistics. Julie -[masked]

As you come up Kuhio Hwy toward Kilauea, you'll see the 23 mile marker just before Kuawa Road which goes to Common Ground... Keep going on highway another half mile or so, past the Shell Gas Station and Kolo Road which goes to the Lighthouse. So, at about 23.5 miles, you'll see the Kauai Minigolf Place on the mountain side of the highway. Turn in there, and we'll meet in the lower parking lot. Feel free to browse the gift shop, sign your waiver, go over to Banana Joes, etc., if you are early.

    Hi Julie,

I rented a bike from John B for $5 for Tuesday. Dennis

  • Julie

Bike ride starts at NOON. Rebecca will be renting a bike at 9am from Coconut Coasters in Kapaa and I might join her for a spin along the bike path from 9:15 until we leave Kapaa for Kilauea at 11:15 If anyone wants to ride the bike path before heading up to Kilauea, we can meet there by Coconut Coasters, leaving by 11:15 to carpool or caravan up to Kilauea if anyone is unsure of the location. You may want to pack a lunch or bring money to stop for lunch somewhere.

I may not be able to attend Tuesday as I have appointments that day. I'll see what I can do. If not, I'll look forward to this ride another time.

      I'll miss you Pam!

Me too...I was really looking forward to this ride but don't think I will be able to make it Tuesday.

Also up for discussion would be whether to have a picnic lunch overlooking the dam or if anyone wants to stop at Common Ground to have lunch - or play a round of Mini Golf after the ride. Loren also has some activities planned on the north shore - canoe trip or bring your own thing to paddle up the Hanalei River, which might be coordinated if the timing was right.

Thanks for all these good ideas! I may be open to any of these activities, but I'll wait to see how things go that day. I may return my rented bike tomorrow, as I won't be needing it for 2 days, and then rent one up there at the mini-golf place.

Julie, I booked another excursion for Tuesday and will try and get it changed; will let you know; thanks.

    December 8, 2012

    • Julie

Aloha Rebecca, it was a pleasure meeting you today at Loren's Birthday gathering. It sounds like you changed your excursion and can meet us on Tuesday. You mentioned renting a bike in Kapaa and doing the bike path before riding with me up to Kilauea. That works for me -- if you know what time you'll be doing that, I can either ride with you along the path - or pick you up when you're done with that. I'll want to leave Kapaa at 11:15am. Feel free to give me a call with your plans and we'll coordinate. [masked]

  • Julie

I would like to change this ride to Tuesday -- I will notify all the attendees by e-mail of the change.

    December 7, 2012

  • Pamela

I also have a bike rack on my Jeep. I live in Kapaa and would be happy to give others & their bikes a lift, if needed.

Everyone has their favorite bike rental place. I always recommend Coconut Coasters. They can be more expensive than some of the other bike rentals but that's for a reason -- they keep their bikes well mainted & provide excellent customer service. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Looking forward to seeing you there.

    • Julie

Oh! I totally forgot the minigolf place is closed on Mondays... There are cheaper places to rent bikes for sure! If you want one with gears, there are a couple of places in Kapaa right on the highway that rent the hybrids for $17 a day. Beach cruisers (no gears) are about $10 per day. I think Dennis found a place that rents 2 for $10. Definitely check around. I also will be coming up from Wailua and have a bike rack. We'll need to start the ride promptly at 12noon - or even before if anyone is up for starting earlier, like at 11am, as I need to work later that day.

      December 6, 2012

  • Rebecca D

Thank you ladies for your offers for transport; I will check about rentals in Kapaa and see which option may be best.

I arrive on the island on Friday afternoon and will have time to check this out before Monday.

I am so excited to be joining this ride!

    December 5, 2012

  • Julie

This one will be the Waikoa Loop Trail. You can rent bikes there or in town and transport them. i do have a bike rack on my car and I will be leaving from Wailua, by the Coconut Marketplace at 11:00 or 11:15.

Please note that Dennis has posted another bike ride for Friday up at the Wailua Forest Reserve. Julie -[masked]

I just learned that I have to work on Sunday December 9th - So, I may be changing this to Monday December 10th - Dennis would this work for you?

    November 27, 2012

    • Dennis N.

Hi Julie, Yes that would be just fine as there are usually other events on the weekends but not much during the week. Perfect!

I changed the date for this bike ride to Monday December 10th. Hopefully the change will allow others to join in as well!
