Hike Sleeping Giant

Note added Thursday:  We will begin our carpool or caravan from behind the Brick Oven Pizza, then pick up Grace who lives near the east trail head, then head over to the West Trail Head on off Kamalu Road and Lokelani... where we will catch up with Jeanne and maybe Diane.  If anyone wants to join up, we can stop at the Kuamoo side trail head along our way, to carpool or caravan to the west trail, which is a little more difficult to find, if you're not familiar.

You can identify me by my picture and my car is a gold Prius with a pink ribbon tied to the bike rack on the back.   Loren drives a white car, often with a red canoe on the top.

I don't know if there is any interest in a pizza lunch or dinner after, I don't have any plans toward that, but will pack a snack and drink to eat at the picnic shelter atop Sleeping Giant.

Sleeping Giant Trails, there are three trails up... Some of us could meet at the Brick Oven Pizza and/or the East Trail Head, at the end of Haleilio Road (to pick up Grace) and then car pool over West (Lokelani Rd off Kamalu) trail head.

That gives an option of going one way of desired. shuttling back for a car if we leave one there.

I think Loren prefers the West Side and we can car pool to the trail head, which is off Kamalu Road and then Lokelani Rd.

I'm fine with the south (from Kuamoo road) or the west (Kamalu) entrance as well. We can meet at Brick Oven Pizza if there is an confusion as to where to meet.  Meet just before noon?  Diane lives closer to the West or South trailheads.  Feel free to make your wish for a meeting place known or else I'll just choose.

It's hard to predict so far in advance what the weather conditions will be for any given day.  Let's hope the weather

Any questions, feel free to call me, Julie [masked]-9443.

Hi Jean, I don't really know how long we will be, it depends on the speed of the hikers and how long we dally at the top. I'm guessing that if we start hiking at about 12:15, we'd be back to trail head by 2:30, so probably the latest back to Brick Oven Parking lot would probably be 3:00??? Is there a way we could phone your family 30 minutes before we expect to be back?

I too will meet you at the Lokelani Road trail head at 12:15. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Jean, maybe just a little before 12noon? This is behind the Pizza place, along the back of the parking lot. Near the entrance off Haleilio Road. Of course, anyone wishing to get together before the hike and have a pizza lunch is welcome to. I won't have time... I will have a hard enough time getting my work done by noon to go on this hike.

I'll leave my place at 11:45am, and drive across the street to Brick Oven Pizza, pick up anyone there, probably at 11;50. That would be possibly you and Loren, and then go up Haleilio and pick up Grace if she signs up, and then we'll all go over to the back side of the Sleeping Giant to the Lokeani St. Trail head. Diane and Jeanne will likley meet us there. If more meet up at Brick Oven, we might take more cars up.

Sounds good to me. I'm in Poipu and need to organize transport. I may have family to drive me, but if not is there a bus I could take?

    January 7, 2013

    • Julie

I don't know much about the bus system from Poipu. Pretty sure Brick Oven Pizza (in Wailua) would have a bus stop near by.

I would love to do a Sleeping Giant trail Loren & Julie! This is on Friday 1/11 not on Tuesday right?

    January 5, 2013

    • Julie

Yes, sorry, I originally had this hike on Tuesday, but Denny posted the hike we are going on in Waimea. It's Friday and I've corrected the description. It looks like the time might change to 12 noon, if that works for everybody.

      Yes! Noon works!

I am interested in Sleeping giant on friday the 11th, but I would need to be back in Kilauea by 4ish. Would it be possible to start a little earlier than 2?

    January 5, 2013

    • Julie

I'm fine with any of the Sleeping Giant Hikes, as that seems to be the preference. I'm fine with starting at 12pm noon instead of 2pm.

I'm good with 12pm as well!

    Hi Julie, Happy new year!

I would love to! Only thing is the bus system is taking a much-deserved day off for the holiday. Would love to meet you for the Kuilau Ridge if I had a set of wheels! (after the 4 th that won't be an issue.) Did the Okolehau Trail the other day and it was a GREAT workout! I am on the North shore....

    January 1, 2013

    • Julie

Happy New Year to you too! Well, maybe someone on the north shore will sign up and can give you a lift to the Wailua Area. If it doesn't work out today, hopefully we can do something another day.
