This was a fun and amazing adventure, which made for a perfect mid-week getaway. Thanks to Denny who was a wonderful thoughtful host.

I celebrate an awesome day at the Kawaikoi Steam trail!
Holy cow! Was it fun! Dennis wasn't kidding when he said it'll be an adventure. Who needs a roller coaster when you have a 4 wheel drive and unpaved road and screaming head in the back seat!
We almost skidded out on the mud and it was thrilling!
Drove through a stream and hiked in the mud and crossed through the rushing stream.

Then there was an impromptu visit to the cliff - Makaha Ridge.
The view was stunning and we were greeted by rainbows all day!
What a day - what a day! Thank you Dennis for being our guide and thank you Julie and Gladys for the wonderful company!

What a wonderful day! Unexpected beauty every step of the way. This is a fantastic hike, but because it's only accessible by 4WD, seldom visited. The ride itself was an adventure, the hike beautiful and peaceful. Then a side trip to Makaha Ridge was a very calming way to end the day. Perfection - a day well spent and shared with kindred souls who also saw the beauty. I'm trying to upload photos but having trouble. Will keep trying...

While this 3 mile loop hike is rated "moderate" and fairly easy it sounds like, taking about 1.5 hours, the trail I was hoping to do after could be defined as "moderate" but "challenging" as it's an exhilarating hike that takes some effort. I'm not sure we should attempt it unless everyone in the group is up for the challenge. It would add another 2 hours to the outing. The Kawaikoi Stream Trail:

Just giving a heads up, in case anyone in the group was thinking this is just a ride, with no hiking. With all the rain we've had, I'm guessing we'll get muddy along the stream? The 2nd hike shouldn't be muddy, but it's overgrown with branches that can snag long pants,so if we do this, wear something you don't care about.

Maybe the RSVPs can be opened back up again, if someone is willing to drive their own 4WD to the trailhead? I'll need a spot in yours, since my car wouldn't make it.

Question: Would you suggest long pants for this? I ask because the 2nd hike I was going to suggest while we are up there (Kalepa Ridge) has a lot of brush, so I would suggested long pants, or prepare to salve lots of scratches after!

Denny said there's a good spot for a picnic lunch up there, so maybe we should all pack a good lunch and water.

long pants are better because there is a section through high grass that is sometimes wet.

If we want to bring a picnic lunch there is a nice picnic area near the start of the trail with a nice overlook.

This is about 17 miles from Waimea to Kokee then a few miles on rough road by 4wd to the stream trail, a easy hike. we may add an additional short hike while we are up there.

Ok great. I don't mind a little mud, but, I don't want my hiking boots soaking wet. Crossing on top of rocks is ok. I just like to know what I am agreeing to do, before I do it.

Have you ever taking your 4Wheel drive down that rough road to the Jurrasic Park gate? If you go there in January, I would love to join you. I will be in Kauai for the month of January. And, can't wait.
