Sante Fe #2 and Itchetucknee #2

This is the trip being added as we had 27 people on the wait list for the first paddle. Ed will lead this one, and will need help from two other people...1 to watch for stragglers and another who could help if a rescue is needed. The rivers are easy (downstream paddles) but we need to be prepared. This paddle will launch at 10:15. The first paddle launches at 9:30. Please have your gear ready to unload on arrival. The kayaks and gear get unloaded in the parking lot at the boat ramp in Hwy 27 just north of High Springs. Cars are shuttled to the takeout on Hwy 47 south of Ft. White. We'll paddle about 9.5 miles downstream past 40+ springs (Poe, Rum Island, Blue, Ginny Springs). The following day we'll do the Itchetucknee River in Ft White.

There are three main motels in High Springs (H.S. Country Inn, the Alamo, and the Cadillac) which are cheap, and near restaurants. I'm trying to arrange a discount for us if more than 10 people book at the High Springs Inn. If you book there, mention the Kayak Explorers and ask for a discount.

There are three campgrounds in the area (Oleno is the closest and lets you see the Santa Fe River BEFORE it goes underground for 3 miles. Oleno Campground is also known as the tick capital of Florida in June...just saying). I can be reached at [masked] or[masked] (no calls between 9 PM PM and 5 AM) Thanks.

These rivers are spring-fed and I think are the prettiest in Florida. The Santa Fe trip runs about 5 hours depending on the lunch stop at Rum Island Park. The Itchetucknee is around 3 to 3 1/2 hours.

Since so many people were on the waiting list, we have added this 2nd paddle for those ON THE WAITING LIST of the 1st paddle. Please do not add yourself to this paddle till the people who signed up earlier are on. The list I have is as follows: Tom +1, Chris +1, Ed +1, Steve Brown, Kumiko Walker, Muriel, Joe#, Cindi Armstrong, Sara Dickenson, Diane, Lois N., Elaine Kampeman, Diane+1, Charles Holly, Mary Jo, Brenda, Aaron, Nick Lincoln, Debbie M., Shawn, Karen Hande. These people have first choice.

Thanks for organizing this trip, Terry and for making it happen for the rest of us. Thanks for leading #2, Ed, you did a great job! LOVE the swimming, and the beautiful underwater grasses in the Itchetucknee! Great FUN with friends on, off and in the water. These are the most beautiful rivers I have paddled in!

I have one room with 2 queen beds reserved at the High Springs Country Inn for both Fri and Sat nights. Since I will be unable to go on this trip I need to cancel the hotel reservations. If anyone is interested in the room please let me know and perhaps there is a way we can transfer the reservation to you. Unless I hear something I will cancel the room tomorrow night (Aug 18).

Please remove your name from the 1st wave if you are now on the second wave "attending" for this meetup. I am requesting that everyone review your expected attendance. This is a very large group and as Terry indicated, we need an accurate accounting of attendee's for both groups. Thank you

Just spoke tothe Itchetucknee Park Ranger again, and there are a couple changes....A)we CAN bring water AND food on the river as long as they are in NON-DISPOSABLE containers; B)no inflatable kayaks or paddle boards are allowed to be put in at north end where we launch. They can be used at the south end. We will meet at the north end of the Itchetucknee Park on the 23rd, unload the gear, drive to the south end to park the vehicles, and launch from the north end.

Just reserved a room at the High Springs for 21st & 22nd.

    August 4, 2012

  • Terry B.

I just confirmed there are rooms at the High Springs Country in the weekend of Sept. 22/23. In order to get a discount, guest have to stay 2 days. Discount is $5.00 per day. ALSO, tell them you are with the Kayak Explorers. A single room cost me $40 plus tax. These are "diver" motels as scuba divers fly in from around the world to cave dive in Ginny Springs. The motels aren't fancy but are ok.

I'll be up there from the 20th on leading tours before the Kayak Explorers arrive and will camp for a couple days and visit my land up there. By Saturday I'll be looking forward to a spot at the High Springs Country Inn, right across from the Springs Diner.
