Fort Desoto Camping and Kayaking to Shell Island-fri-sat-sun

  • Nov 30, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

FYI:Signing up on Friday basically means you plan to join Friday as well as Saturday

CAMPERS CAN PADDLE WHENEVER THEY WANT FRIDAY THERE WILL BE NO SCHEDULED FRIDAY PADDLE-the site doesnt let me not post a time

OUR SCHEDULED PADDLE WILL BE SAT DEC 1 AT 10 AM-launch details below-(see Saturday posting for the map to the launch) SATURDAY-We will launch at exactly 4 miles after turning onto SR 679 on the right. This is a great put in spot that allows for multiple cars.

Campers can paddle there to meet the group--look for Anne

Come to Fort Desoto for a weekend of fun! We will paddle to Shell Island with its wonderful white sandy beach, as well as in and around the bay and through the mangroves. Most of the water in the park is relatively shallow and protected and provides shelter for dolphins, manatees, wading birds, shorebirds, snook, mullet, redfish, trout, and scores of other varieties of wild creatures.

I have reserved a campsite 42 on the water for FRIDAY and SAT nights-and we can all hang out and take some impromptu paddles throughout the day - plus play corn hole and other games-take some walks and check out the park. I will arrive Friday at 4PM to campsite.

Kayak Explorers are welcome to come and hang out whether they camp or not.

For joiners who want to camp there are still some sites available-To reserve your own site go to the site below and click the Reserve by date on the left under Reservations.

SITES AVAILABLE: Site 41 which is across from mine is available - as well as sites[masked] look good and are on the water-click reserve on the site and it shows you a photo of it...book yours now as its rare to get a site at De Soto.

Jill, Linda K, Debbie M and everyone else who wants to participate in this pot luck is welcome to join us. Again, I am bringing chicken breasts, Craig is bringing gourmet burgers, Victoria is bringing snacks. Please let us know what you can bring for a small group. We can use sides dishes. Anything would be awesome but please let us know what you are bringing so we do not duplicate sides. Thank you.

I think I have space at site 50 for camping if anyone else wants to camp. Ed, are you still looking for a place to pitch your tent? I just have a small tent myself.

Can people still come and join the paddle without camping at this point?

Thanks guys, but I'm still confused. Yes it does look like those sites are on the water but if you click on them on the reservation area it says "Not on the Water" :-/

    September 4, 2012

    • Linda S

I know this is a late response. I emailed them about site 72 and 74. They said you could launch from there. I take it.. Waterfront means "water view"..I would say 72, 74 and[masked] have some "water access". As noted when you reserve they have actual pictures. I saved several to my pc. You can SEE the water from the site 50 photo. Email ranger if you are concerned. James Wright: [masked] Looking forward to the trip. I'm going back in January 25th.

Hey Anne, I won't be able to go to this one so someone can have my spot at the site.

    September 24, 2012

    • Jack C.

Terry, Sorry you won't be paddling with us that weekend. I was looking forward to helping you teach the safety/beginner class. I will still volunteer to teach the class.

      September 24, 2012

    • Terry B.

Hi Jack, I had a family from up north confirm that date for a tour so I'll be guiding that day. About all I teach in the class are basic strokes with sweeps, braces and draw strokes. After that, to capsize, drain the boat, and several methods of re-entry. Thenwe do a simple T-rescue. None of that requires an ACA cert and I'm sure that if people just ask questions...how to do this, etc, you can show them the strokes. You have more experience than I do in rough water and this will be a great way for people to learn how to control their kayak. I just wanted people to get a bit better at re-entries and able to rescue someone else.We have about 15-20 people who have done the class and they should be willing to join in and help the others.

      September 24, 2012

  • Jack C.

I just saw that Terry Brawley will not be attending the Fort Desoto paddle. Terry had offered to teach a safety/beginner class and I had offered to help him. I will still offer to teach this class. Hopefully we can do this sometime on Saturday when we have more members present. If the class is large, I could use few volunteers to help.
NOTE: I am not a ACA certified instructor yet. I am tentatively scheduled to take my certification class in February.

    September 24, 2012

  • Jack C.

I will be glad to help teach a skills class. Paddling skills, rescue skills, rolling, whatever anyone wants help with. We should arrive home about 1-2 weeks before this trip. After paddling whitewater all Spring, Summer, and Fall, this should be a pleasant change of pace. Looking forward to seeing everyone

When did you guys want to do your class? Sat afternoon after our SAT AM paddle?

      September 7, 2012

    • Jack C.

Any time is OK with me as I will be there all weekend. I think Saturday afternoon sounds great as everyone should be there then including those who only came for a day.
