June 23, 2013 sunset and full moon walk from Gray's Beach to Chapin Beach

More people signed up for this in May than for any other event, so let's try it again, hoping for good weather this time.

Low tide in Barnstable Harbor is predicted to be 6:10 PM and sunset is at 8:19 PM, so if we set off at 6:30 PM, we will have enough light to get back and then see the sunset. I'm making the "launch" time earlier than in May because we paddled Chase Garden today and the water seemed much higher than it did last year at high tide.  Does that mean it will be higher at low tide also?  I  really don't know, but I don't want us caught out on Chapin Beach and wading back, chest deep in water!

There is "super full moon" that night, so if we are still there when the moon rises, we might see a full moon that appears larger and closer than it usually does.

We'll wade/walk across the mouth of Chase Garden Creek to the sandy beach on the other side of the water, where off-road vehicles go from the end of Chapin Beach Rd., Dennis. Everybody seems to enjoy it and the dogs love it.  There is a HUGE area of wet sand on the Chapin Beach side where we can walk.

Suggestions: bare feet/water shoes/kayaking shoes would be good.  A bathing suit or shorts seems ideal...plan to get wet to at least mid-thigh.  Consider NOT carrying anything you don't want to get wet....if you slip, you'll end up in the water. Or ziploc bag your cell phone.

DIRECTIONS:  From Rt.6, the Mid-Cape Highway, take exit 8 and go NORTH on Union St. to Rt 6A.  Cross 6A, by going a tiny bit to the left of a gas station to get on Old Church St.  (If you miss that and are on 6A heading west, take the next right on Playground and head will join Old Church St. )  About 0.3 mile up Old Church from 6A, bear right at the stop sign onto Center St. Go 0.5 mile on Center and at the T, take a left to stay on Center and drive until you are in the parking lot.  Park there and walk down the gravel road to the beach, just before the boardwalk. There are restrooms at the back of the parking lot. If you get there early, walking out the boardwalk gives a nice, distant view.

Fingers crossed for good weather.  Hope it works this time.

Should be 10 stars for participants being such good sports ! It was windy, but warm. As the description said "plan to get wet at least up to mid-thigh" and most of us got over without getting our shorts wet. The new unpleasant aspect was that there is a short stretch of shoe-sucking mud close to shore (6-8" deep), but in bare feet, it was easier. I planned the beginning of the walk to be 20 minutes after dead low tide in the harbor, but the water was still going out of the creek all while we were on the Dennis side of the walk, so the water was more shallow on the return walk. The clouds came in just before sunset, mucking that up : ) But, the people were great.
