Thurs, July 3 - Paddle the Herring River, Harwich

The Herring River is a scenic waterway, surrounded by over 200 acres of Harwich Conservation Lands.  We always see birds along the peaceful banks and expansive marsh.

The launch area is muck when the river is low and it will be low this morning, with high tide in the sound at 4:50 AM and low tide at 10:40 AM.

We'll head to the end of the river. There won't be enough water to get us to make it the last 300' to the very end of the river, where we usually briefly stretch our legs near the herring ladder that connects the river with the West Reservoir.  <aybe we can get out on hard packed sand, in the water.  (This scenic area offers a panoramic view of the reservoir. There is a tiny area to get out on when the water level is just right.)

All paddles are for experienced and energetic paddlers. This is not a place to "get experience on the water"...you need that experience before paddling with this group.

DIRECTIONS: COMING FROM EAST OF HARWICH: Take exit 10 from US 6 and turn onto Rt 124 south. Drive to the intersection of 124 and 39. Take 39 south for 1.3 miles to Rt 28, turn right onto 28 north, go 0.9 mile and turn LEFT down a slope into a dirt parking lot just before the Herring River Bridge. Do not cross the bridge. Do not pass Cape Cod's irish Pub.

COMING FROM WEST OF HARWICH: Take exit 9A and go south on Rt 134 and drive about 2 miles to Rt 28. Turn left at the lights onto Rt 28 / Main Street and go east about 2 miles, though the "downtown area" of Dennisport ...see Bishop's Terrace restaurant on the left and Riverside Drive on the right...then you can't miss Cape Cod's Irish Pub on the left. Cross the bridge and take a right turn, down a slope into a dirt parking lot.

Plan to arrive before 10:00 AM, as we will be in the water and paddling at 10:00.

The wind forecast is down on all 4 weather sites. Small chance of rain. Fog certain. See you in the water at 10:00. Lunch after at Clancy's.

The forecasts that I put in an email to you were: "The Weather Channel, weather.com, forecasts winds at only 11 and 12 mph tomorrow during our paddle hours.

NWS has winds being higher than that...10-14 mph.

windfinder.com shows 17 mph w gusts to 23 mph at 11:00 AM tomorrow. Their forecast is sometimes high for winds."

AS OF 6:30 PM, ALL OF THOSE FORECASTS RTS. ACCUWEATHER FOR HARWICH HAS WINDS @ 7 mph WITH GUSTS TO ONLY 12 mph FOR HARWICH TOMORROW.

SO, IGNORING WINDFINDER.COM, IT LOOKS OK. I THINK I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE OF THE HIGH WINDS TODAY & YESTERDAY. BUT I'LL GO WITH THE FORECASTS AND WILL BE AT THE LAUNCH BEFORE 10:00 AM TOMORROW.

The wind forecast for Thursday is not good...a touch worse than for today and tomorrow. It's still a few days out, but because of the surrounding forecasts, it does not look like the forecast will improve for Thursday. Friday looks BAD. Saturday looks OK, as of now. So, this paddle may not happen.
