Sat, Sept 6 - Paddle Quivett Creek CANCELED

This will be our first Quivett Creek paddle after Labor Day, when Brewster stickers are no longer required for parking.

We'll launch at 10:00 AM, because high tide in Barnstable and Sesuit Harbors is about 9:18 AM.

As of July 29, when this is being posted, we'll plan to launch from Paines Creek Beach. If parking there is not possible, we'll launch from Mantz Landing. From either launch, we'll hug the shore going west to the mouth of Quivett Creek.  As we make our way up this wonderful creek, we'll be surrounded by extensive marsh.

Even though the vast majority of the paddle is in protected water in the marsh, the paddle from the launch to the marsh is wide open. If the wind is out of the north, then kayaks are pushed in toward land and water is splashed over the side of the kayak.  (for us non-sea kayakers, who paddle without a skirt.) If wind is out of the east, it can be difficult to get back to the launch.

LIKE ALL OUR PADDLES, THIS PADDLE IS ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED AND ENERGETIC PEOPLE WHO ALREADY HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE KAYAKING, THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO GET SOME TIME ON THE WATER. YOU MUST HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE BEFORE PADDLING WITH US.

DIRECTIONS: From US 6, take exit 9 and go north on Rt 134 to Rt 6A. Go right on 6A and drive east for 2.75 miles...bear left at a fork onto Lower Rd.  Drive 0.2 mile and turn left onto Paines Creek Rd and go about 0.7 mile to the parking lot.

We launch PRIOR to the rocks, on the left...there is a  small, paved, downward sloping ramp to the water that is not obvious as you approach it.

If there is NO wind and if many people sign up for this paddle, the launch location can be switched to Mants Landing, that has a large parking lot. Parking at Paines Creek is very limited.

Make sure I can contact you in case weather forces cancellation.

Because the forecast is for strong gusts ALL MORNING, ALL DAY and ALL EVENING tomorrow, it probably will not change. Wind would not affect the section of the paddle in the creek, but there is a half mile of open water between the launch and the creek.

Gusts of 22-26 mph will push water over the side of the boat and most of us do not own skirts. We can paddle Punkhorn tomorrow OR postpone the paddle until Sun (enough water in creek). Paddles scheduled for Mon & Tues = three back to back paddles for me. Not enough water up the creek and not enough water near the launch/landing later in the week. (even at a "good tide" we have had to walk the last 200' sometimes)

If there are not a couple of people who vote for either paddling Punkhorn tomorrow OR postponing to Sunday, then I'll have to cancel the paddle tomorrow. I'd be happy to do Punkhorn, but if everyone wants to do Quivett Creek on Sunday, we'll do that. You need to let me know by 7:00 or 8:00 tonight.

1:45 PM Friday.....the forecast for Brewster between 10:00 and noon, now has wind at about 13-14 mph, but predicts gusts to about 24 mph ALL MORNING (actually, starting tonight.) so my suggestion about an early launch is not an effective one to avoid the strong wind gusts. Have not yet gotten any opinions on whether you would like consider switching locations to Punkhorn.

Post a comment here or shoot me an email.

Will post something by about 7:00 PMish.

I'm along for the ride. If weather dictates a change, so be it. I'll monitor the emails for an update Fri. evening.

As of 8:00 AM Friday, the NWS forecast for our paddle time tomorrow is that early fog will have cleared and that there will be wind at about 13 mph, out of the southwest....but with gusts to about 26 mph. I'm using the hourly forecast for Brewster.

Will watch it today to see if the wind gust predictions stay the same. If they do, the paddle can be switched to Punkhorn Parklands, where the tall trees block part of the wind. Punkhorn is very close to Paines Creek. We could even meet at Paines Creek and make a decision there....and maybe hop over to Punkhorn. Let's see how the forecast evolves.
