NOT PADDLING THE MANATEE- Mon, Dec.16

EVERYONE EXCEPT BARBARA DROPPED OUT, SO WE ARE LAUNCHING AT JACARANDA AND PADDLING CURRY CREEK TOMORROW, MONDAY, AT 10:00. EMAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO JOIN US.  Joyce

We'll paddle the Manatee River and into Gambel Creek. The Manatee from Ft Hamer up to Gambel Creek is wide open; Gambel Creek is beautiful and protected. We'll aim for  a total of about 7 miles on the water, with one short break.

Ft. Hamer has the best restrooms at any paddle launch location : )

As is true of all paddles with this group, this is for members only (experienced and energetic kayakers). No guests on paddles.

If high wind is forecast, we will change the launch location to the end of Mulholland Drive and paddle only on Gambel Creek and stay off the Manatee River. If wind is forecast, I'll email everyone the day before. To get to the alternate launch if wind is forecast, follow directions below, except "Turn right (south) on Ft Hamer Rd, go just under 1 mile, passing the Annie Lucy Williams Elementary school on the left. Turn left on Mulholland Rd. and drive to the end of the road, which ends at a bridge.  The launch is on the left side of the road before the bridge, with parking all along the road.

DIRECTIONS:

From I-75, take Exit 224 onto Hwy. 301 North...the ramp at the left. Drive about two miles to a traffic light and turn right (east) onto Old Tampa Rd. There is a Hancock Bank and 7-11 on the right and a CVS diagonally across the road. Continue east on Old Tampa Rd for about 3.5 miles to a stop sign at Ft. Hamer Rd. Turn right (south) on Ft Hamer Rd, go about 1 mile, passing the Annie Lucy Williams Elementary school on the left. Turn left on Mulholland Rd. and drive to the end of the road, which ends at a bridge.  The launch is on the left side of the road and is pictured in the photo above.

Barbara, Allen and I launched into the totally sheltered Curry Creek. Always a pretty paddle...perfect for a windy day.

As of 7:00 AM Sunday, the forecast for Bradenton tomorrow is:
"Sunny, with a high near 68. North northeast wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph."

So, the best possible temperature, but windy. If that remains the forecast, we'll launch off Mulholland Rd and stay in Gambel Creek for the whole paddle. Directions are in the original description of the paddle above.

I paddled the Manatee River, launching from Ft Hamer, on Wed, Dec 4. Low tide was at 9:30 AM at Redfish Point.....the water in the river was low, so we stayed on the river instead of going up Gambel Creek. Gambel Creek is definitely my preference, but having enough water to make it up the creek is more of a preference.

I checked the tides for the 16th and low tide at Redfish Point is 8:00 AM...more water in the river and the creek than there was 2 days ago, but still maybe low in Gambel Creek. Am a bit concerned about not having enough water to go up the creek on the 16th. I can move this paddle and substitute a different one for the 16th.
