Paddle Frog Creek, Terra Ceia Preserve, Palmetto - Sun, Jan 12

This is a paddle you may not have done. Two friends and I explored this paddle a month ago and it is "my kind of paddle".....heavy vegetation, some water open to the sky, some areas in mangrove "tunnels" with tight turns and no view of the sky. We'll do about 6 3/4 miles...more if I get you lost.  I mapped it on my GPS, but I think there is still opportunity to add some unintended mileage ! Many turns are marked with pink plastic ties or pink spray paint, but...... Anyway, it's a beautiful paddle....totally wild, not a house in sight.

I'm giving "Frog Creek Kayaking" free publicity because it shows much of the route that we will be taking. (they charge $10 to launch each kayak). We will launch where you see the creek crossing Bishop Harbor Rd and will head west to I-275. If the current under the I-275 bridge seems OK, we'll go another 500' to Terra Ceia Rd and take a break. Then we'll paddle back past the launch and go PAST where you see the LAUNCH point on the map above and go another mile or so. The water ends in thick vegetation. Then we'll return to our cars on Bishop Harbor Rd,

DIRECTIONS: My mapping program says the address of the bridge is 8630 Bishop Harbor. Please check it yourself. There are 2 good ways to get to the Bishop Harbor bridge:

1-  I-75, Take Exit 229, Go west on Moccasin Wallow Road. Cross US 41 at a stop sign (no traffic light) and the road becomes Bishop Harbor. About 3.2 miles from I-75 to the bridge

2-  I-75, Take Exit 228 to go west on I-275. Go to first exit off 275, which is US 41. Go N on 41 one mile and take left on Moccasin Wallow. About 1.4 miles to the bridge.

As always, no guests on paddles. We'll be in the water and paddling by 10:00.

I had heard that Frog Creek was a nice paddle and I wasn't at all disappointed. Really enjoyed paddling with the group. Thanks to Joyce for leading the trip and to Rick and Roxanne for the pictures.

Jen and Bruce, try to make it tomorrow....great paddle.
The NWS forecast for Palmetto tomorrow now shows a bit of wind, but the vast majority of the paddle is protected and to avoid stressing your hands, Jen, you could skip the last little bit shown on the map that is just north of I-75 and open....and wait for us in the sheltered creek.

For the launch, check the map that Doug has posted a link to...or follow my directions above or plug the address I gave into GPS.

    See you tomorrow?

    Jen,
The map above is from Frog Creek Kayaking center - Joyce just used it to show the Frog Creek area. We are not launching at the kayak center but instead at the bridge on Bishop Harbor Road. There is no $10 charge to park and launch there.
Here is a map showing the put in:

we're (Bruce and I) a maybe... depends how my hands feel and not sure about having to shell out $10 ea... will see how we feel in the morning. I'll call if we're coming. I'm assuming we're NOT doing a shuttle, even though the map shows a shuttle, yes?

Wouldn't miss it! Don't have a GPS but do have a deck mounted compass and will bring a map of the area.

    See you there!
This sounds like a great opportunity to better my kayaking skills.......heavy vegetation, some water open to the sky, some areas in mangrove "tunnels" with tight turns : )

As of 10:00 am on Friday, the NWS weather forecast for Palmetto on Sunday is spectacular:

Mostly sunny, with a high of 72. Northeast wind around 10 mph.

It doesn't get much better than that, if the present forecast holds up. Even though I have waypoints on my GPS for this trip, am not sure if I saved the route. There are probably places between 2 waypoints where we will meet a fork, so there is still a chance I will take us off the intended route for a bit ...but it will still be pretty and we'll be kayaking in good weather, so no problem. (I've just never taken a group off the intended route before and think this may be the first time. If you have a GPS, please bring it).

I just did this paddle for the first time last Saturday and it was great. The launch is only 3 miles from my home, but I never knew about Frog Creek until last week. Look forward to paddling with this group.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
