LAUNCH LOCATION CHANGED TO SNOOK HAVEN....
THE FLOATING DOCK IDEA WAS NOT A GOOD ONE.
SO, IGNORE THE REST OF THIS DESCRIPTION.
LAUNCH AT SNOOK HAVEN AT 10:00 AM THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 11.
The launch is from a Venice park, at the very east end of Laurel Rd. There is a fairly long carry to the launch on a paved sidewalk....wheels are ideal. The launch is into a pretty cove, off the Myakka, that seems to be a favorite with alligators.
This is a difficult launch for some of us, but it gets us to an area of the Myakka River that we can't reach from Snook Haven, staying within my 8 mile round trip limit. It is about an 11 mile round trip between Snook Haven and this launch. We could do a shuttle, but most people don't like shuttles...so we'll access this section of the Myakka by launching from a stupid floating dock that most people don't like (except you strong or fit or young or male paddlers). I have launched there 3 times and can get into the boat from the dock, but prefer to land away from the dock, amid gators, and tie a line on my kayak to someone else's boat to pull over to the dock that is only ~ 50' away and walk back to the launch. There have always been alligators in this cove.
We'll paddle upriver as far as the water depth or surface debris allows (one never knows when a new tree drops across a narrow section of the river...bring loppers, Dave). Expect to paddle against the current going upriver, especially if it has just rained...but it's a nice ride back down.
As always, there are no guests on paddles.
DIRECTIONS: From I-75, take the Laurel Rd exit, #195, and drive east as far as you can go. You drive right into the park at the sign pictured below (thanks, Anne)
