kayaking

Thank to everyone that is coming for this fun little paddle out at Northwest river park. The Baum road access point cannot handle anymore than about 6 vehicles.

This paddle initially started from Tanya Thompson and as grown very quickly into a good solid group.

The plan as of right now is for everyone to meet at the Park entrance and we will coordinate shuttles or condensing Kayaks to vehicles that can hold more than 1.

I cannot stress this enough ... PLEASE bring your PFD, sunscreen, water and a snack.

The weather is going to be quite nice with sunny skies and warm temps. Once we gather at get everyone to Baum road we will get the paddle under way and head out towards to dock at the end of the park. Once their if anyone needs to jump out and stretch or get situated they can do so. Then we will continue our paddle and head back to Baum road after a an hour or 2. I am sure it will all come together nicely once we are all at the park. Be Safe driving in the morning!

Larry. How many is not many? I have a trailer and usually can park along the edges of a small lot, it would be good to have an estimate of space since I'm driving an hour to get there.

Henry, As mentioned above the parking area at the Baum road access can handle around 6 vehicles comfortably and still have room to move around and tote Kayaks to the waters edge. The new plan is for everyone to meet at the park Entrance and we will coordinate and possibly condense vehicles or do a few quick shuttles to the access point. It is only about 2 miles or less from the park entrance.

Wow.. look at the turnout! The parking area at Baum will not handle more than 6 vehicles at best. Lets have everyone meet at the park entrance at 9 and we can condence kayaks on vehicles or carpool. Whichever is easiest. I can handle 1 more kayak on my exterra if need be.
Really looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great morning of paddling.
Once again EVERYONE MEET AT THE PARK ENTRANCE

I'm planning to drive to the put-in, but that parking area will not hold many cars, so if anyone can carpool, it might be a good idea.

David, I went by the put-in to check it out this afternoon, saw the locked gate and sign saying to call for access. I didn't know how to reach you on short notice, so I called and the person I talked to said she would have someone there to unlock it at 9. Hope you don't mind my jumping in. See you tomorrow.

The Baum Road Kayak Launch is my favorite put-in at Northwest River Park and I think one of the prettiest paddles in Tidewater. I might be bias, I am the Outdoor Programmer for Northwest and Cheaspeake Parks & Recreation. It's @ 2 miles from Baum to the dock at the park, pack a lunch and enjoy.

Be sure to call the park[masked] @ 9:00am when the camp store opens to ask them to unlock the gate to Baum Rd.

Sallie this is just going to be a fun paddle in and around northwest river park to get a few people acquainted with the waterways. Probably a few hours of paddling and 3-5 miles.. Nothing too hard.

Water lvl is about 3-4 feet at the access point and roughly 9 ft wide. It opens up fairly wide after 100 yards or so. After that there is plenty of space to paddle

David, what is the size of the water there - 100ft. wide, 10 ft. deep? Bigger? Smaller?

Access point is just past the entrance to Northwest river park on Baum Rd. It is a small access point that leads out to the river and from there we can have a leisurely paddle toward the parks southern Dock or we can head out into the river. Bring sunscreen, your PFD, water and a small snack.
