Almost Full Moon Paddle

June 23rd is the full moon. Moon rise is 6:39 pm on on Friday June 21. Lets meet at Dandy Point and Messic Point on Friday evening. If leaving from Messic, we should be on the water by 7:00pm, it's a 2 mile paddle to Dandy Point.  Paddle through the back marshes in Grandview. Meet at 7pm and leave by 7:30. Bring a cooler and we can stop on Grandview and see the bay break in on the beach. PFD and light required. Bring water or cooler with a beverage suggested. This is a slow and liesurely paddle through quiet tidal rivers - should be agreeable to all. Bring fishing gear if you are so inclined because the night fishing near Grandview is great.

Well Lianne and I had another great Full Moon Paddle Saturday night Started out in the rain, paddled out of Back Creek and the clouds broke up with the Moon rising, as we paddled thru the Goodwin Islands we had the most beautiful sunset I have seen in years. We paddled with the Virginia Paddlers Meetup Group, a great group to paddle with.

I guess I was already on my way to the launch to see the last minute messages. Paddling in the rain is really nice. And then to see the Moon come out and shine its peaceful light on the rippling evening water... Beautiful! We had a good time.

For an event to be considered cancelled, the organizer would put that up top and "change the event" rather than put it in this thread, and you should be notified per email. So if you don't see any of that, the paddle is on.

ps: double check your email settings if you don't get mails

Those that showed up had a nice Almost Full Moon Paddle. As we reached Long Creek the clouds opened up Full Moon in front of us, Sun setting behind us. Lianne, Fred and myself had a fun crossing from Messic Point, wind and waves of about 1 1/2'. On the return trip the wind had let up and waves were down till we reached the channel where we encountered swells coming in from the Bay that were running 2' or better at times. Not a crossing for beginners, but a lot of fun for those that enjoy challenging condition.

I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it. Rush hour + rain = too late to paddle for me. Hopefully next time!

Can someone tell me what's law about lights

    June 16, 2013

    • Dan B.

Its fairly simple.. Any vessel on the water after dusk needs a white light visible from 1 mile! That includes kayaks and canoes.

I'll join the group at Dandy Point. I work in South Hampton so I'll already be in the area right after work. I need to get my kayak out this year anyways & I've paddled this route twice before.

(and yes, George, I got a new boat last year after mine failed...remember that night at Ft. Monroe??) ;-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
