Great way to start the weekend. I'm still trying to get Barbara clean though. We would be happy to do it again.

Nice quiet morning for paddling... glad the rain held off. Lou, thank you for the suggestion to pull a container behind the kayak for the trash. The cooler float & plastic container I used worked well & didn't offer much resistance when paddling.

Bev - I really liked your cooler float/ My cooler kept turning over and becoming a sea anchor. If fact, I just went to Amazon and ordered a cooler "tube" just in case I ever do another river clean-up, and if not, it is always good to carry your beer.

    Hi Guys,

I saw Christopher (thanks Chris for setting this up), but I did not get the chance to meet anyone else. Before I knew it I was pushing my small red baby 'yak through an acre of mud. I still smell the river mud on me.

Did any of you pick up something REALLY interesting?

I got one interesting fishing lure and a like new (but muddy) fishing rod.

I also found a bucket in the mud, and I did not want it in the boat with me so I tied a rope to it and let it float behind my 'yak. Well, the thing turned over, filled with water, and then bit into the bottom. I tried to pull it up with the rope and it almost turned me over. I had to cut the rope. So, the bucket is waiting for the next cleanup crew.

Single neatest thing: There is a night heron standing on the rocks under the bridge (VB Blvd), and I got within inches of it and it did not move. I hope some of you saw it, because it is a lovely bird.

    Now for another shower.

    Until we meet(up) again.

Below is an e-mail from the event organizers Trista Imrich and Jody Ullimann:

    Hey River Mudrats!

I am looking forward to the chance to get muddy cleaning up the Lynnhaven River with you all this Saturday. Thanks for signing up to join me on the water-based cleanup of the Lynnhaven River. Remember, It is bring your own kayak or canoe. Also, the advertised meeting address is Pep Boys, but there should be enough parking at the Hutton Circle launch (they are right beside each other), so please park at the launch first and then if we have to, we can park the rest of the cars at Pep Boys.

They are calling for rain on Saturday. If it is thundering and lightning it is cancelled. If it is just raining, check your email. I will send out an email by 7am that morning letting you know if is a go or no go.

If you need to reach me, use the cell number below. I do accept text messages.

    See you Saturday.

I have done a few events doing this type of clean-up. Here are some tips (feel free to ignore).

    - bring a pair of work gloves. You could find things that you do not want to touch
    - bring a pick-up tool. A crab net makes an excellent "pick crap from the water" tool
    - bring a thing to put the trash in. Bags do not work well for me. The last event I went to like this, one of the boaters towed an old styrofoam cooler and put the trash in it. The trash never got into her boat.
    - depending on the area, you might encounter wild things like ticks and snakes. Bring some insect repellent, and watch out for what you grab.
    - if you are going to walk around, and pair of waterproof boots are a good idea
    - this is a great application for a small recreational kayak (sit or sit-on-top). Canoes work well also. Your $2,000 ocean kayak is probably not the best boat for this (don't count on doing any rolls).

I found these directions, but I have not checked the accuracy. I'll bet they are pretty close unless I am WAY OFF in some other land.
    =======================================

Hutton Circle Small Boat Launch is located off of Virginia Beach Boulevard, between Lynnhaven Parkway and Great Neck Road. From Virginia Beach Blvd. Turn North on Hutton Lane, make a left at the end of the street on to Oconee Ave, and make the first left on to Hutton Circle. At the end of the street there are 3 parking spots, as well as some on street parking.

The path to the dock is about 150 yards, so you may want to bring a cart-dolly for your kayak.

The launch is a floating dock, that appears to be about the right height for entering and exiting a kayak. The dock itself seamed a bit springy to me, but that may have just been due to the low water level.

There are no additional facilities here, aside from the dock.
