Mid-week After Work Paddle on the Hampton River

Let's unwind on the Hampton River. The area is well protected and suitable for paddlers of any skill level. We'll pass through the marina district, Hampton University and the Air & Space museum. We’ll launch at 6:15 from the public ramp near the Hampton SurfRider restaurant. We should be back at the ramp by 8:15ish.

Like all meet-ups, a life jacket (PFD) must be worn, and since we’ll be out past sunset you’ll need to bring a light so you can be seen by other boaters.

Sunset 7:41pm, tide is Low at 5:16pm and high at 11:18

There's nothing like getting out on the water on a perfect summer evening with a small group of kayaking enthusiasts. Great organization with experienced paddlers who welcome newbies. Play around on the water or create a challenge for yourself. No charge for the sunset. I enjoyed seeing familiar faces, and it was particularly fun to witness Greg's enthusiasm at trying out his new boat.

Yesterday evening I joined the kayak paddle event with Al, Hesham, Fred, and Val. This was my 2nd kayak out on the water, it was great! Al Hunt (Event Host) took the time to provide excellent instruction, guidance, and insight about kayaking during the trip in order to improve your skills and knowledge about the sport.

He and Hesham also let me paddle their kayaks during the trip so that I could experience the difference of paddling a hard shell kayak vs. my inflatable. I now know which type of kayak I’d like in the future!!
So after this great event I will definitely put more paddles under my belt, most likely this Saturday morning at Sandy Bottom Nature Park.

P.S., I didn’t get swamped out of my kayak this time like I did off VA BCH during my 1st kayak experience!!! Kept it high and dry.

What kind of light do you recommend?

Anything that will get the attention of another boater and work when you need it. West Marine sells some nice waterproof flashlights and head lamps from Princton Tec. Some are U.S. made. There $20-40, and will work when wet unlike Walmart stuff. I have several extra lights. I bring one for you to use.
