Paddle Chesapeake/VA Beach

Hey everyone I posted in the discussion board about paddling locally here in Chesapeake/VA beach just wondering who would be interested for an upcoming date between August 6-12th? Paddle location is tentative, I thought Back Bay/Stumpy Lake/Great Bridge Locks etc.

looks like the possibility of afternoon kayak trip is off. Maybe the weather will be better next weekend.

there is a nice place off Blackwater Rd. that is somewhat protected. I'd rather paddle in the afternoon around 1pm if the weather cooperates and anyone else is interested. There is a $2 launch fee at the store near the bridge, but it is an easy put in and a lovely winter paddle.
email me at [masked] if interested.
I won't go unless at least 1 other person confirms.

OK, it's a long drive from Suffolk to the launch site. i need a firm yes or no on this paddle. Is it a go? If the predicted winds are over 5 -10 mph I will paddle one of the Suffolk lakes rather than make the 100 mile round trip. Post here or e-mail me at [masked]

I'm interested - today I "think" I will be buying my first entry level used kayak - although eventually I know I'll want a faster one I want some time to look around - I have my eye on a used "critter" which was entry level by Wilderness Systems - at 9 ft something - it looks to be in good shape and think I can get it for $100 to $150 easy - it's small - but i'm only 5ft 1 - and the longer ones are rather intimidating unless I bulk up or something.. any thoughts on this kayak - i probably would need to get a ffew things to outfit it better - such as a spray skirt, bilge pump , etc etc - but for starters - is this ok?? they say it tracks well (which is ipmortant to me) -but it's certainly not going to be all that fast.. For kind of paddling you all do - would this be ok?? (I paddled alot in NOVA when living there but rented and borrowed alot)

Peggy, if you're planning to do most of your paddling on the HR waters, the 9ft kayak is ok for the calm lakes and streams. However if you're going on the wide rivers and open sounds or bays, you would be better off in a kayak 14' plus. You may think they look intimidating, but longer kayaks are actually more easy to stay on track in windy conditions and require less energy on longer distances.
Also, if you're in a position to wait a couple months, the local kayak shops host a demo paddling event in early May where you can test drive multiple types to find the right one for you.

Hi - thanks for input.. actually - for price of a nice steak dinner for two and a bottle of wine I went ahead and bought this - LOL - too cheap (130) - plus two paddles - so at least I have "something" to use until I get something else - I have my eye on a tsunami 145 - something like that - but will take my time to find a good deal - and will be going to the demo paddling thing out in va beach in may... they actually have a couple used ones on sale.. may even bit the bulloet before then ... so... anyway - I have it.. very light by the way - .. I'll keep this one for companion kayak for friends, etc..
