Paddle the Bay (Back Bay that is) PLEASE read the comments

Launch from Lotus Garden Park and head south into North Bay. We can turn south and thread our way between the islands and mainland entering Shipps Bay. Then paddle over to the eastern side of the National Wildlife Refuge and turn north to Little Island Park for a break. After that cross the bay back to Ashville Bridge Creek and Lotus Garden Park. Total mileage should be about 12 miles. If your boat is less than14 ft. you may have a problem keeping up with the longer boats but all are welcome (SUP’s, canoes, kayaks) Bring snacks and as always, dress for the water temp and PFD’s are required. Long range wx forecast calls for 55 to 60 degrees and a 0 to 15% chance of precip. I can be reached at[masked]-1137.

Gene and everyone, I am waiting till Friday morning to make a final decision on this paddle. Currently all the wx guessers are calling for high winds. Horn point as Shawn has suggested would be a 100 mile round trip for me and others may have a long drive also so I want to make sure this is doable for everyone.
I would hate to cancel this if we can “work around” the weather. Cold is no problem but 25-30 mph winds are a different story. If anyone has any suggestions for a relatively sheltered area please feel free to post them. The only area I am familiar with is the Pagan River area.

I am not familiar with Back Bay launch sites. All indications are that a launch from Lotus Park or Surf & Adventure will not be feasible due to low water conditions. I realize conditions can change overnight but I don’t like to wait till the last minute to do things. If anyone can suggest a different launch site please do. If no suggestions are made I will cancel this one and post a different paddle. Please check back often.

Lovitts Landing at Beggars Bridge Creek on Muddy Creek Road. It is about 2 miles south of Blue Pete's Restaurant. The parking area and launch are about[masked] yards south of the bridge on the east side of the road. Plenty of roadside parking is availabile. There is usually a large raft of Coots at the mouth of the creek in winter.

Thanks for the information I will file it away for future use. Unfortunately I have posted the change to Windsor Castle Park. It appears that some people are already changing their RSVP to “not going”.

Good morning everyone, I just received this update from Jeremy Wheeler of channel 10. Hello Jim. Unfortunately, it's not a good update. The winds are still expected to be strong out of the northwest, but even more than I mentioned before. Winds during the day on Saturday will be northwest at about 15-20mph with gusts up to 35mph. Partly to mostly cloudy. I'll leave it up to you of course, but I don't recommend going out with those winds....if it's even possible. Either way I hope you have a good Thanksgiving!
Based on this information and the profiles of those who have indicated they are coming I am changing this paddle. We will launch from Windsor Castle Parks roller ramp at 9:30 AM. We can paddle north for about 1/3 mile then turn left into the more protected waters of the Pagan River. We should be able to explore several miles of the river bank. Please post a yes or no so I know who is going to attend. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving.

Hi Dave, I may have to change or even cancel this paddle due to the high winds that are predicted for Saturday. Here's what I received today from Jeremy Wheeler of WAVY-TV 10. "Hello Jim. It's a bit preliminary, but for now the wind looks to come out of the north and northwest at 10-20mph with gusts up to 25mph...maybe 30mph. A big cold front is coming through and causing the wind to pick up and change direction. Hope that helps. Have a good one" I may opt for one of the local riverssuch as the Pagan launching from Windsor Castle Park. Watch for a post Friday morning or just give me a call.

While I always enjoy a challenge, driving 3 hrs each way to paddle in gale force winds with no required objective, except to paddle med flats, leaves me wanting.

Try the Horn Point launch. It's right on the bay and water levels should be good there. Address for launch is near 1027 Horn Point Rd., Virginia Beach.
