Sunrise Paddle (Notice date change due to WX)

Everybody does sunset paddles so let’s reverse this one and watch the sun come up for a change. If you are (or can be for this event) an early riser, join me for a morning paddle. Let’s meet at Little Island Park in Virginia Beach GPS coordinates[masked],[masked] address 3820 S. Sandpiper Rd, Virginia Beach at 6:00 am. We will launch by 6:30 am. Twilight should be around 6:45 am and sunrise will be at 7:14 am.

There are no lights at the launch site so please bring lighting to assist you with your launch. If you have any questions give me a call[masked]-1137.

We will paddle south towards Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge then circle around the island to the west turning north and heading back to Little Island Park. The trip should be around 6 -7 miles.

This paddle is open to all boats and SUP’s but please, know your limitations. I will check and post the predicted weather/winds on Friday evening. If you have a short boat, no spray skirt and limited experience then this may not be the paddle to start with if winds are up. As always, dress for the water temp not the air temp.

Parking for this paddle is on the ocean side of Sandbridge road. There is no charge for parking and we can assist each other with getting the boats from the parking area to the launch site.

Be sure to bring water and any snacks you may need.

As always I will be driving a silver Chevrolet P/U with kayak racks.

In case of rain or winds with gust predicted of over 20 mph this paddle will be canceled.

We can stop at one of the local establishments for breakfast after the paddle.

Please check back often in case of changes.

Not trying to discourage anyone but if you do not have a wetsuit or dry suit you may want to reconsider doing this paddle. I would rather have you err on the side of safety as they say than suffer the consequences of not being prepared.

Currently the winds for tomorrow morning are forecast to be SW @ 7 -14 mph. Air temp high 20s to low 30’s. This will mean a wind chill of around 16 to 20 degrees using the highest wind (15) and lowest temp (28). Water temp should be around 50 according to however be prepared for temps to be a little cooler (high 40’s). Please dress for possible immersion. Most people think “I am not going to tip” but they should be thinking that there is always the chance something could happen that could put me in the water. IF YOU SHOW UP TOMORROW AND ARE NOT PREPARED FOR THIS PADDLE YOU WILL BE ASK NOT TO JOIN THE GROUP!

There are no lights at the launch site so please bring a light source.

We will be on the road between 5 and 5:15 if you need to contact me [masked]

Thanks Matt for the input. Based on what you have said and the following reports I have received from two local newscasters I am changing the paddle to Sunday morning. Same time, same place.

    From Miles Henderson: Good morning!
Saturday will be rough... NW 15-25 G35. Sunday is better... NW 5-10

From Jeremy Wheeler: Hello Jim. How are you? I'm sorry, but once again it seems that the wind will not work in your favor. The winds will be strong and persistent out of the northwest. I estimate about 10-20 with gusts up to 25mph by late morning. These numbers are a bit preliminary, but that's what they look like at this time. No doubt about the breeziness, but the direction and exact numbers could change a bit. Either way have a good day and a safe trip if you do keep it

Thanks Curtis, After reading what you wrote I call the park and was told that they will have the gate open at 6:30. So we can meet at 6:30 and launch ASAP.

Little Island Park does not open until 7AM. I do not believe that you can park along the road. Lotus Park or Beggars Bridge Creek would be better if you wanted to launch at this time. It takes about an hour to reach Back Bay from Lotus Park, it only takes about 15 minutes to reach Back Bay from Beggers Bridge Creek.
