Paddle Chocolate bayou

Let's go somewhere new: Chocolate bayou just south of Alvin, TX

12pm, ready to launch at 12:30

Length: ~6.5 miles
Put in: Chocolate Bayou park
From the BPA website:
Chocolate Bayou Park is a park with no signage or major facilities. What it does have is great parking, a small boat ramp and it is in a mixed pine / hardwood forest. The park can be reached by taking Hwy. 35 south out of Alvin. Chocolate Bayou is just south of FM 2917 and the park is at the southwest corner of Hwy 35 and the bayou. There is a boat ramp sign.

The small road down to Chocolate Bayou Park is barely visible from Hwy. 35. You can park close to the boat ramp and use it for an easy launch. The bayou will remain slightly ditch like for few bends and then starts to become more and more natural. At about the middle of the trip you will come upon a dam. This will be our turn around point as it may be difficult to get boats over the dam.

This paddle will be fairly easy and beginners are welcome. The most difficult aspect is the potential for wind for only portions of the trip (where the bayou aligns with wind direction).

There are no rentals near by, so this will be a bring your own boat event.

There are a few road closures today. I recommend you check Houston TranStar traffic for the closures to check your route to Alvin. Note...rodeo parade downtown too!

For your safety and the safety of your fellow paddlers, I strongly encourage life jackets be worn. Please make sure you have one with you.

by what time will we be back at launch point? I have something at 5PM. If we can be back by 3:00PM I will be there.

I suspect we'll be out until 4 or 4:30. It's a 6.5 mile paddle and our average speed is 2-2.5 mph. You can always turn back early if you need.

Do I have to have my own kayak for this?

    February 14, 2013

    • Amy G.

Also, is there a way to rent kayaks?

      February 14, 2013

    • Amy O

As stated in the description of the event, you need to bring a boat (yours or rented) to the launch. ACK and REI both have rentals, but you'll have to drive the boat to the launch location yourself.

I've launched here before. We crossed the dam without incident and went down stream to a nice community park. We did the car shuttle first during the cold of the morning and had a picnic at the end in the warm afternoon sun. With the low elevation and the dam there was practically no current. Out and back will make a nice paddle too.

    January 30, 2013

    • Amy O

I'm trying to keep it simple. It's doubtful we'll have enough cars for shuttles and with new people on the trip, the dam could cause some issues that I don't want to be responsible for. With the right group, it's no doubt nicer to just go 1 way though.

I would like to do this paddle but I work that day. If I can get out early, I will go.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
