Introduction

A Liam, a chara, Is fada ó bhí muid i dteagmháil le chéile. Tá súil agam go bhfuil tú go maith. Tá mé fós ag teagasc Gaeilge i bhFilideilfia agus bíonn Meetup (Foghlaim na Gaeilge) agam ar líne freisin. Deas an grúpa seo a fheiceáil. - R

Is this your first time studying Manx or another Celtic language?

No, tá Gaeilge na hÉireann agam agus roinnt Ghaeilge na hAlban. Beagán Manannaise ach cleachtadh uaim! I went to the Isle of Man this past summer and had a one-day workshop there, and a visit to the Manx-medium school.

What inspires your interest in Manx? Do you have Manx roots?

General interest in Celtic languages. Irish and Scottish roots, but no Manx that I know of. Níl a fhios agam cé chomh minic is a bheinn ábalta dul go hAlexandria le haghaidh cruinnithe ach dá mbeadh rud mar lá nó leathlá Manannaise ann lá éigin, bheadh sé sin go hiontach.

  • but didn't teach it to her children (my father included, she wanted them to blend in with other american children). So I am one generation removed from the language, know nary a word, but have a proclivity for other languages, English primarily but also French and German. I believe it a birthright to know the language, which formed my culture and consciousness. I would like to start the Absolute Beginners but am unclear which it is. Could you help direct me?
    Thanks,

  • Hi Roisin. Did you teach at Penn? Iwork there and have been trying to fit Irish into my schedule for years. My grandmother was bilingual, as were a few generations of her family (the earned money as translators between the gentry and workers, as they lived (and cousins still do) in a heavily gaeltacht area (west galway/monivea). when my grandmother came to the us, however, she would speak to her friends in irish

  • Hi Roisin:

Will a new Advanced Beginner Group be starting up--IDK whether I could just hop in. Also, Amana wanted to know whether an Complete Beginner Group was starting up. She lives in Philly now, so she could also possibly attend a class you're teaching at a local, venue. She mentioned that she'd e-maild you and that you hadn't gotten back to her.

    Cheers
Maire Durkan (my hubby pronounces my name as "Mora" and so do all of the Irish rellies, so that's what I go by)

  • Hi Roisin:My boys are playing session at The Plough and The Stars in Philly tomorrow from 5-9, so I won't be online. I'll wait on the lessons until the advanced beginners start a new session.
