Tarifa (Spain) 24-26 Feb 2012 (map)
Well, time to start kitesurfing/kite'learning again and as it's too cold for my liking in the UK at the beginning of the year...Tarifa sounds like a place to go.
Here is some info on the wind conditions and Tarifa itself: http://www.planetkite...
I have been over there learning to kitesurf in October this year and I'm returning to complete the course- however the place is amazing for every level of skills.
The school that I'll be using is Tantrum Kitesurf: http://www.tantrumkitesurf.com/index_1.php They have been really great and offer unlimited hours - we've managed last time around 6-7h in a day with an instructor.
The flights are currently at around 60 return with Easyjet and Monarch. I've booked below flights:
Easy Jet: London Gatwick (North Terminal) to Gibraltar
Dep 24 February 2012 07:10
Arr 24 February 2012 11:05
MonarchAir :Gibraltar(GIB) to London Luton (LTN)
Dep Sun 26 Feb 2012 19:15
Arr Sun 26 Feb 2012 21:00
I know that 3 days doesn't sound nowhere near enough, but Tarifa is an hour drive from GIB so if we if we are lucky and the wind is good we can actually fit in 3 days of kitesurfing:) I think it's a good start and it only requires a day off work.
If anyone would be interested I will then post more details on what the plan is. Everyone is more than welcome to come along. Ania
Please could you share the experience about who did you do your course with and maybe more about your plans for this trip, aren't 3 days a bit too short ? Cheers
Hi Karim, I haven't yet booked the hotel...thought I will leave it until after X'mas and NY. Just the flights have been booked to take the advantage of low fares and I've checked with the school that they are open.
I'm guessing you would stay in the town and the kitesurfing instructor takes you to the beach each day. I've been last summer and had to hitch hike to the beach. how do u get from gib to Tarifa? by Bus I'm guessing. 3 days is short! And water might be chilly! Brrrrrr :-)
Great:) Yes, the school picked us up and then dropped back daily. Last time we did as well 3 days, but on arrival we spend the day trekking up the Rock in GIB and then took the last bus to Tarifa. However this time if the conditions permit we can contact the school and get them to pick us up from the airport and take to the beach right away...all depends on how we decide to play the day:) I know it's short but it's a good start, nice break and a chance to do some kitesurfing..should be fun:)
Btw. I will be now away for X'mas and NY...so to any new questions I will respond on my return.
Merry X'mas everyone and all the best for 2012!
Hi Guys, I have some contacts for cheap accommodation and gear rental in tarifa. if anyone is interested drop me a msg.
Hi Karim, I was talking about how much I weigh and the size of the kite is in meters. so wanted to know this time of year what size kite I would need to use in tarifa (do not know the winds)
I don't know either. From wind records it looks like either low wind. Or very high. So take 7m and 14m. I have 7,9,12,14 kites. So I would look at the forcast few days before and decide which 2 kites to take. I'm 76 kgs. Look at http://www.windguru.cz/int/historie.php?id_georegion=150&...![]()

Hi Karim
I only have two kites a 12 and a 15
That is one of my concerns
well, its always a gamble. if you go with those 2 kites you will be fine unless there is high wind. eg 18 to 20 knots or more. but from the forecast this happens every 2 weeks and last 3 or 4 days. but even on those high wind days you could kite towards th end of the day when conditions die down maybe. or rent a 9m kite about 40 euros a day.
Karim have you been to tarifa before
I am beginner to intermediate
Could go one way no problem but I have problem coming back still learning to let one hand down the side so my shoulder aligns
So worried to go with advanced people but concidering coming with the group
When are u guys going to find out about the accommodation?
I've been before. I'm just worried it will be cold and the wind too low. And won't be fun. Really you need to go with the school each day. Mainly for safety and rescue but also as transport. Maybe email the school and ask. If I come I will do this. Another point is that if the wind is strong I think it is offshore direction, mwhich is too scary for me without rescue support. Even though I'm an intermediate kilter.
