I know it's not really our venue, but it's summer. Why not for Beer? More importantly, Todd is back for this event!

Studio Square is only 2 stops from the City with R train and 3 stops by NW train. You don't need to go all the way to the end of NW train for Bohemian garden. Studio Square is fairly new Beer Garden in this area, huge picnic table area outside and big space inside in case of the rain.

Please check their website for the menu (they have sushi menu too!). http://studiosquarenyc.com/main.html

Let's mingle, get to know other members and have a good time.

This is a Multi-Group event and I am posting at:

BUY A SUIT

Veteran director Jun Ichikawa (Tony Takitani), who died suddenly the night that he finished editing this film (originally a private project), reveals his more personal and playful side while filming with nothing more than a few friends as actors and a camcorder. The film follows Yuki's visit to Tokyo in search of her missing brother, Hisashi, and their later reunion with Hisashi's ex-wife. Ichikawa's camerawork and plain sets draw out a more affectionate and gentle side of these characters and their connection amidst the barren Tokyo cityscape.

2008, 47 min., HDcam. Directed by Jun Ichikawa. With Yukiko Sunahara, Sabakichi and Momoko Mieda.

In memory of late director Jun Ichikawa, the screening of Buy a Suit will be followed by a conversation with Momoko Mieda, a star of the film and Ichikawa's personal friend.

Bio: Jun Ichikawa
Born in Tokyo, Jun Ichikawa is renowned for his modern sensibility and skillfully directed films, as well as for his iconic TV commercials. His films include recent art house favorite Tony Takitani (2004), Ryoma's Wife, Her Husband and Her Lover (2002), Tokyo Marigold (2001), Osaka Story (1999), Tokyo Lullaby (1997), Tokiwa: The Manga Apartment (1996), The Tokyo Siblings (1995), Dying at a Hospital (1993), Tugumi (1990) and Bu su (1987).

AIN'T NO TOMORROWS

17 year-old Hiruma is desperate to get laid and takes out his sexual urges on Anpai, a fat boy who has “boobs.” His classmate Tomono, a sickly loner, is in a serious relationship with their married teacher. This bold, yet humorous portrait of six high school seniors reveals the suffocating realities of coming of age. Yuki Tanada (One Million Yen Girl, 2008; script for Sakuran, 2007) is an emerging director who is distinguished by her intimate realist approach to characters.

2008, 79 min., Digibeta. Directed by Yuki Tanada. With Tokio Emoto, Yuya Endo, Tomorowo Taguchi and Sakura Ando.

CONFESSION OF A DOG

"In Japan there are two things you shouldn't question: the emperor and the police," says the film's protagonist, Takeda, a loyal detective who is seduced into an organized drug ring involving Japan's entire police department. Over three hours long, this film is fast-paced and full of astounding performances and a gritty attitude. This riveting commentary on law enforcement's abuse of power, the media's complete obedience and unquestioning public compliance was finally released in Japan after a four-year controversy.

2008, 195 minutes, DVcam. Directed by Gen Takahashi. With Shun Sugata, Hironobu Nomura and Harumi Inoue and Gen Idemitsu.

Achilles and the Tortoise

Written, directed by and starring one of Japan's most famous entertainers, Takeshi Kitano (Hana-bi, 1997; Zatoichi, 2003), this cynical comedy is the final installment of a trilogy that explores an artist's dilemma. As a young boy, Machisu becomes convinced of his talent when an artist praises him for one of his drawings. Machisu, with the unconditional support of his wife, devotes his life to art, but ironically, these tenacious aspirations lead only to his inadvertent imitation of famous paintings.

2008, 119 min., 35mm. Directed by Takeshi Kitano. With Beat Takeshi, Kanako Higuchi, Yurei Yanagi and Kumiko Aso.

Vacation

“Anyone who is willing to assist the execution will be granted a weeklong vacation.” Hirai, a quiet, middle-aged prison guard, finds little joy at his job other than his daily interactions with Kaneda, a death-row inmate. But when he struggles to gain acceptance from his six-year-old stepson, he agrees to assist in Kaneda’s execution, so that he may take his new family on a modest trip. This subtle yet emotionally powerful film explores the dark side of Hirai and Kaneda’s conscience as the execution approaches.

2008, 115 min., 35mm. Directed by Hajime Kadoi. With Kaoru Kobayashi, Hidetoshi Nishijima and Nene Otsuka.

Hi Everyone!

This time we will have a meetup @ SHABURI. SHABURI specializes in shabu shabu. Shabu shabu is Japanese variant of hot pot. The dish is traditionally made with thinly sliced beef, though modern preparations sometimes use pork, crab, chicken, duck, or lobster. Most often, tender ribeye steak is used, but less tender cuts such as top sirloin are also common. A more expensive meat, such as Wagyu (Japanese beef), may also be used for its enhanced flavor and texture.

Shaburi has a huge space upstairs with nice ambiance and the owner is always good to us. Not only that, they are willing to give one section for us on Friday night. Even if you are not meat eater, they do have nice warm and cold appetizer, salad, various Sushi Rolls, or you can even s hare the fish Entree. So come on and join us. I will post this in 3 different Japanese related meetups. Let's mingle!

***Important***
- Please do not delay
- If you RSVPed Yes and need to cancel, please change your RSVP to NO as soon as possible
- I've noticed there are so many members interested in Karaoke. If you are, please let me know, email me, or post a comment. Since this place is close to Japas 38, I will book that place too.
